1936

The 1936 championship featured some remarkable matches, for contrasting reasons.
Joe Davis beat Tom Newman 29-2, but was actually a whitewash since he achieved a winning lead at 16-0.

Meanwhile Willie Smith needed to win all six frames of the final evening to beat Sidney Smith 16-15 from 10-15 down at the end of the afternoon.

O’Donnell v. Lee

23 March (47331)
Frame 1: 49-39. O’Donnell led 37-25 on colours. Lee took yellow to blue to lead by 2 but unluickily went in-off the pink, which O’Donnell took for the frame.
Frame 2: 46-60. O’Donnell made 12 twice in leading 46-40 on colours. Lee claimed all the colours up to the pink, which he fluked for the frame.
Frame 3: 58-48. Lee made 17, O’Donnell 24 to lead 50-36 on colours. O’Donnell took yellow, Lee green to blue before O’Donnell doubled the pink for frame.
Frame 4: 69-61. Lee made 16 and O’Donnell 15, 13 and 18 to lead 55-49 on the green. Lee gained a foul, O’Donnell took green and Lee brown before O’Donnell got blue and once again doubled the pink for the frame.
Frame 5: 51-62. Lee made 34 to lead 31-55 on the colours. O’Donnell cleared to blue and later took the pink, but Lee won on the black. 3-2
Evening: The five frames were completed in just under 70 minutes.
Frame 6: 22-71. Lee made 15, 31 and 13; O’Donnell conceded on the yellow.
Frame 7: 70-41. O’Donnell made 26, 10 and 15 to lead 59-28 on colours. Lee gained a foul and first three colours, but no more.
Frame 8: 77-9. O’Donnell made 46 (five blues, two blacks) and later 22 and Lee conceded on the yellow.
Frame 9: 12-58. O’Donnell unlucky to be called for a push shot early on; he eventually conceded on the last red. Lee made 14 twice.
Frame 10: 64-36. O’Donnell made some "very good strokes, including one remarkable swerve stroke when ... snookered". O’Donnell led 50-30 on colours and took first three. 6-4

Frame 11: 65-44. Lee led 33-44 with two reds left. O’Donnell took red-brown-red-pink and cleared to pink, the break of 32 winning the frame.
Frame 12: 97-21. O’Donnell made 35 early on.
Frame 13: 22-65. Lee made 25 in leading 22-52 on colours. O’Donnell missed a couple of opportunities and eventually conceded on the blue.
Frame 14: 10-65. O’Donnell conceded with three reds left.
Frame 15: 46-30. Lee led 21-30 with one red left; O’Donnell took red-brown and cleared to blue, later winning on the pink. 9-6
Evening: Frame 16: 33-60. Lee made 14 and 16 in leading 24-50 on the colours. O’Donnell took first three colours but Lee gained a foul and potted the blue.

Horace Lindrum v. B. Terry

26 March (47334)
Frame 1: 45-58. Terry missed a simple pink for the frame, but it went round the table into the middle pocket.
Frame 2: 52-59 (re-spotted black). Terry made 19 in leading 28-49 on the colours. Lindrum took yellow, Terry the green and Lindrum brown before clearing the last three colours to tie the scores. Lindrum won the toss; Terry left Lindrum a difficult pot which he missed, and Terry cut the black in.
Frame 3: unreported; Lindrum won it.
Frame 4: 66-26. Lindrum made 16, 17 and 15 in leading 60-23 on the colours.
Frame 5: 87-41. Terry made 13 and 16, Lindrum made 29 and, with a 20, led 55-41. He cleared 32 – red-brown-colours clearance – to win the frame. 3-2
Evening: Frame 6: 59-30. Terry made 22, Lindrum 15 and 13. indrum made 30 with red-black-red-black-yellow to blue.
Frame 7: 35-66. Terry made 24 (three blacks) and led 26-55 on colours.
Frame 8: 63-44. Terry miscued early on, Lindrum made a 28 (four pinks) and led 48-35 on colours.
Frame 9: 32-45. Terry made a fantastic cut red in winning this frame.
Frame 10: 57-61. Both made mistakes, before Terry won on the black. 5-5

Frame 11: 72-27. Lindrum made 39 (three blacks, two blues, yellow) and Terry conceded on the brown.
Frame 12: 61-36. Terry made 21, and trailed by 1 on the colours. He unfortunately went in-off the yellow and Lindrum cleared yellow to blue and later pink.
Frame 13: 14-96. A cluster of reds surrounded the black on the edge of a pocket. Lindrum eventually knocked the black in, and also later went in-off the black, and he conceded in all 32 points in fouls. Terry also made 33 and 19.
Frame 14: 72-19. Lindrum made 16 and 26 and Terry conceded on the blue.
Frame 15: 65-47. Lindrum made 13 and 21 and led 43-33 on the colours. 9-6
Evening: Frame 16: 75-47. Lindrum led 52-27 on colours; Terry cleverly snookered Lindrum a few times, but blue was his only colour.
Frame 17: 33-62. Terry made 13 and 17.
Frame 18: 44-32. Close all the way, 26-23 on the colours. Terry took yellow to brown but left the blue; Lindrum potted it and the pink.
Frame 19: 83-52. Lindrum made 25 (three blacks); after Terry gave away a foul from a difficult snooker, Lindrum cleared last red-black-yellow. Terry made the green but had no further success.
Frame 20: 81-38. Lindrum made 36, Terry 29. 13-7

Frame 21: 55-62 (re-spotted black). Highest break was Lindrum's 21
Frame 22: 72-34. Lindrum made 18 and 22.
Frame 23: 65-52. Terry made 38 including four blacks, scores were 52-52 on pink. Lindrum took pink and black.
Frame 24: 80-37. Lindrum thus achieved a winning lead at 16-8.
Frame 25: 69-35. Lindrum's chief breaks in frames 24 and 25 were 20, 26 and 28.
Evening: The remaining dead frames were shared three apiece; it is not stated which were won by whom:
Lindrum's wins were 54(20)-34, 78(40,38)-49(26), 86(29,30)-37.

Frame 1: 50-27. Both made 13 and Davis led 30-27 on the colours. Newman missed an easy yellow and Davis cleared to pink.
Frame 2: 67-40. Davis made 36 (three blues, two pinks, green), and led 50-22 on colours. Newman got the snooker he needed but then himself fouled.
Frame 3: 75-51. Newman made 24 and Davis led (after flukes on both sides) 48-39 on the colours.
Frame 4: 102-8. Davis made a 62 (seven blacks and a blue). Davis made 33 up to the brown.
Frame 5: 66-54. Davis made 22 and 19, Newman made 16 and a 25 up to the blue. Davis took pink for the frame. 5-0
Evening: Frame 6: 94-25. Davis made 72 (eight blacks and a pink).
Frame 7: 96-22. Newman made 22, then Davis made 21 and 27. Cleared red-pink-red-pink-yellow to pink for a 34.
Frame 8: 78-49. Davis made 17, 16 and 45 (four blacks, a blue and a pink). With Davis leading 78-6, Newman made a 43.
Frame 9: 70-53. Davis made 28 and 32, Newman a 29. Davis led 64-35 on the colours. Newman gained the foul he needed, took yellow to blue but missed a fairly easy pink.
Frame 10: 61-56. Newman made 21 and 25, and potted the blue to lead by 14 with pink and black left. However, he went in-off the pink, which Davis potted before doubling the black. 10-0

Frame 11: 90-22. Davis made 41 (five blacks) and 26 in leading 84-8 on colours. Newman had a bit of potting practice.
Frame 12: 102-1. Davis made 28, 22, 16 and a yellow-to-pink 20.
Frame 13: 57-43. Newman laid several snookers, from which Davis escaped using a steeplechase shot. Newman led 41-31 before taking the yellow but missed the green with the half-butt and Davis cleared up.
Frame 14: 82-19. Davis made 18, 24 and 40 (reds with two pink and blue, followed by yellow to pink).
Frame 15: 95-8. Davis made 45 (two browns, green, three blacks and blue), 32 and 18. 15-0
Evening: Frame 16: 74-30. Davis made 17 and 23, and Newman 17. Davis thus achieved a winning lead at 16-0

Frame 2: 24-73. Mann made 37 (two pinks, three blacks), and led 22-61 on the colours.
Frame 3: 66-30. Man made 24 in leading 14-30. Stanbury made [?]34 (green, blue, brown, pink two blacks) to lead 52-30 on the colours. Stanbury potted the first three colours and on going in-off the blue Mann conceded.
Frame 4: 76-39. Stanbury made 17 and 26 and led 63-28 on the colours. Mann still persevered, but went in-off the green and then fluked lue and fluked pink to lose.
Frame 5: 54-34. Much safety. Mann had early lead but led only 27-31 on the colours. Stanbury potted yellow and led after Mann went in-off the green. Mann took green, Stanbury brown and blue, and from a snooker Mann unluckily went in-off the pink having swerved to hit it. 2-3

Frame 24: 48-37. Mann led 28-33 on the colours. Stanbury took yellow, then fouled but later took green to blue to lead 42-37. Mann unfortunate that the pink kissed the black and finished over the pocket for Stanbury. Thus Stanbury achieved a winning lead at 16-8.

Frame 1: 68-29. Davis led 47-26 on the colours.
Frame 2: 60-39. Davis made 42 (four blacks, blue and green) but Smith persevered and, on the colours, trailed by only 5. Smith took yellow, but Davis fluked a length-of-the-table double on the green, setting up the win.
Frame 3: 53-47. Smith led 27-42 on the colours and took the yellow and green – but went in-off the brown. Davis took brown and blue; Smith missed a thin cut on the pink and Davis cleared.
Frame 4: 61-47. Davis made 16 and Smith 26 to lead 17-42. Davis made 29 (three red-blacks, yellow, green) before winning on the pink.

An article in The Times on February 22 (47615) noted:

"Snooker pool [as it was still normally referred to – or 'Snooker’s Pool'], which is being played with so much interest at the present time, is a game of comparative modern invention, and was given little consideration in the days of that band of players who helped to make the game of billiards what it is to-day. Until recent times the modern professional player had little affection for the potting game, regarding it merely as of secondary importance, but the advent of the younger Lindrum, and the challenges which were made last season by the Canadian players altered the outlook considerably. The championship on that occasion attracted a record entry and, although the number of competitors this year in the competition which will be begun to-day is not so large, it includes all of the leading English players, who will be challenged again by H. Lindrum, a nephew of that famous player who showed the possibilities of quick scoring at billiards.
Instituted 10 years ago the snooker championship has been won with uninterrupted consistency by J. Davis, regarded generally as the greatest player of this interesting game in the world. Since the other preofessionals have given so much more attention to the game, the standard of play has improved all round, and, for that reason, it is conceivable that Davis's task will be a more severeone than ever before. The general expectation is that his most formidable rival again will be Lindrum, whom Davis beat in the final last year."

Smith took yellow to brown, Davis took blue and, after Smith had gone in-off it, the pink from tight under the top cushion, and added black for frame.
Frame 38: 61-63. Davis made 43 and Smith 27. Davis made 16 and, from a snooker, played a superb massé shot. Davis led 61-34 on the green, but Smith took green, gained a snooker, took brown and blue and, after Davis played a bad shot on the pink, took pink and black for frame.
