  • Joe Davis snooker plus

Can anyone tell me what year Joe Davis played in the news of the world snooker plus at wisbech cambridgeshire as we have a post advertising the event in november but no year

I don't have specific reference to Davis playing in Wisbech, but it was likely to have been during the 1959-60 season. He started to actively promote the game at this time, and it was quite short-lived.

I'm not so sure if it was actually used in that last NotW event but it certainly came out in58/59. The orange and purple were in funny positions tho, bit of a gimmic and it just fizzled out, as did pro snooker in general. Jackie Rea made the highest break at snooker plus, a 155!

The last News of the World sponsored tournament was in 1959 and was played under the "snooker plus" rules as advocated by Joe Davis (no official rules had been issued at that time, although they would be adopted by the BA&CC shortly afterwards.) The newspaper had previously announced that they would not sponsor another tournament, but were persuaded to finance a short series of games involving the two Davis brothers and John Pulman who played each other twice each week in 2-day matches of 25 frames each. These were staged over three weeks (not consecutive) from 26th October – 21st November 1959.

All of these matches took place at Burroughes Hall in London, so the poster advertising Wisbech is not directly connected, but I feel it must be close to this date.
