orange and Purple

I've heard that the game once included balls of orange and purple as extra point scoring balls, but no-one I've asked knows any details. Anyone on here know?

basically i believe they went between blue nd pink and blue and brown.... summut lik that. but because its easier to make breaks on black and pink because reds positioned closer to them.... the other colours were never really potted durin breaks

I actually do have a purple and orange ball, but they've been sat on a window ledge for years and are rather faded!

The orange one we occasionally used for a friend of mine who was colourblind, instead of the brown.

I've heard mention of this, but don't really know the rules. Somebody tell them to Barry Hearn. If he's tried Power Snooker, he should try this.

Yup snooker plus, I think Joe Davis tried to popularise the game by increasing the highest break total. Obviously the table becomes a little cluttered with 2 extra colours on the table & the game never really took off.

I found a set of orange/purple balls in the club I play in (Joe Davis was a previous member there as it happens) a few years back and had a few frames of the game with a mate. It was fun for all of an hour but got a little tedious as the extra colours helped break building significantly, but the table became cluttered more easily

It must be quite a task as you have to go up and down the table every time to get a 210.

Exactly!! Having to maneuver the white so much more than snooker is going to present you with a lot more situations where you could run out of position. I'd love to know what Joe Davis' highest break was at the game. I'd imagine he holds the highest break as he was out and out the best player of his generation & the game never took off, today its as good as extinct. May have to google it but doubt that info is anywhere on the net though

although snooker is way, way hard enough for me and most of us, it would be interesting to see what Ronnie and the other top pro's could do with snooker plus ... for those who don't know the format, there are two extra colour balls, one between pink and blue (8 points) and one between blue and brown (9 points) ... so to score a maximum, you have to keep going from red to baulk area and back to red and back to baulk etc - so lots of excitement as players lose position and try recovery pots ...

maybe something for Barry Hearn to think about if he's reading this ... after all, the Shoot-Out which is just as radical actually works ... maybe an invitational event with the top 8 players in the world and a wildcard or two over a single weekend ... I want commission Barry if this takes off!

The extra colours on the table would help significantly if you were to run out of position on the intended ball. Maximums obviously become more difficult, but general break building eases, especially when all 8 colours are on their spots. I've only played a few frames of snooker plus but its the only game I've knocked a ton in (excluding line-ups...oh and darts ). Gonna have to get them balls out & give it another whirl sometime

Would definitely be fun to see a televised knockout what, with all the variations we've seen over the past few seasons. Though wouldn't want to see it played with the lairy pissed crowds you see at the shootout/power snooker. Always put me off watching what otherwise would be some good snooker viewing!!

good points CueInAction ... so you're saying it's easier for the likes of me or other average players - good, I like that, it's a very hard game with only 6 colours and a cueing action like mine ...

I guess you're saying the problem is pro's may always knock in a frame winning break ... well the way round that is perhaps aggregate scoring over a number of frames - so say, player (a) knocks in a conservative 147 - next frame, player (b) could go for a 210 or near ...

is safety more difficult? I'm not totally sure, obviously the risk/reward changes which might make it interesting too ...
