Have been busy working on the frame scores from all matches at the crucible. I think there are probably some errors in here - so if anyone can spot one or think of other comebacks from 5 frames behind that would be helpful.

Not quite sure if this is going to come out okay - but here are the players that have won crucible matches even though their opponent has scored over 175 more points.

Most be the type of match where you're thinking I should win comfortably and then its suddenly into a decider. They are a couple of matches here involving Alex Higgins - notably the 82 semi-final.

Matches at the Crucible where the aggregate points difference is better than than the scoreline would suggest.

          Take for example:

          1979 Higgins, A. Griffiths 12–13 Griffiths 1645 1341 304

Higgins scored 1645 compared to Grifffiths 1341 - a difference of 304 but Higgins lost. All these matches are very tight - and in some cases there is a more attacking player (Higgins or O'Sullivan for example) who have probably had more centuires in the match - but their opponent has hung in and won the match.

I noticed that the Maguire Higgins semi-final from this year was in this category - with Maguire outscoring Higgins but not being able to finish the match off.

It is not all that unusual for a player to win a match despite scoring fewer points.

Looking at the Crucible alone, the loser outscored the winner in 88 of the 897 matches – that's not all that far off 10%.

The most extreme example in terms of percentage difference, is the 1999 first-rounder between Chris Small and Anthony Hamilton, which Small won 10-9 despite being outscored 879-1271 – i.e. he scored less than 41% of the points in the match!

The greatest winning margin in a match where the winner scored the fewer points came in the 1986 and 1997 finals, both of which were won by 6 frames and yet the runner-up outscored the champion:
              Johnson-Davis 18-12 1501-1564
              Doherty-Hendry 18-12 1497-1611

David Gray beat Jimmy White in 2006, and Drew Henry beat Mark King in 2003, in the first round with a score of 10-5 despite the loser outscoring (the lesat close best-of-19s).

Indeed, the full list (excluding 2007) will be found here:

                Are you sure, Dan?

According to my records Maguire scored 1526 points and Higgins 1698.

No - not certain - I'll have a look tonight.

P.S - What is the secret to posting tables on here?

There is a thread in the support forum on tables, but this is basically it: Everything here is without spaces (although you can have spaces and returns in individual cell entries):

                    HTML Code:
At the start insert this: <table border=1>

At the start of each line: <tr> and at the end: </tr>

Between these, each cell starts with <td> and ends </td>

So for the header row of a table you might have:

                    <tr><td>Name</td><td>Score</td><td>Position</td></tr>

Then at the end of the table: </table>

Some forums or subforums are set up to disallow tables, by the way.

I find it easiest to do the table in Excel, insert a column between each 'real' column, in which you put a load of </td><td>'s; paste the whole lot as unformatted text into Word, then use Find and Replace to find all the tab characters and returns and replace them with nothing. You can then copy and paste that into the thread, add the table top and table bottom and hey presto it works — but it does require a bit of practice!

                        Good thread dantuck 7.
Where do you get your information? I think Nigel Bond outscored Peter Ebdon in this years first round, although i'm not sure. He lost the match 10-7 anyway.

Great match it was too, Higgy was on for 3 centuries in a row in the first session before breaking down on 45. Griff pinched that frame and ended the first session only 2-6 adrift. Griff made his second century of the match in the decider. One of the all time great Crucible matches.

That's nothing. I was on for 5 consecutive centuries, including a 147 in the 5th, in a practice match at the weekend. Unfortunately, I broke down on 13 during the first almost-century and that put me right off, as a result of which I never made the other four either.
