Thanks for the comments and the info on serial number as opposed to year. Sounds like a bit of (more) history sitting in my basement. Well chuffed.

Tempted to take the raper plate off and see if the original is behind

This is what a plate from the period would have looked like. You could get a replacement made if you wanted. There are companies that make good reporductions.
