Ray did indeed. I think he was something like 14-19 behind Spencer in the semi's and won 23-22. He then lost the first session of the final to Charlton 0-7. I'm not certain if I have the Snooker Scene you need to get those scores, but I will check when I get a moment.

Cheers TS! Thank you for posting this. The BBC, I believe, televised the weekends only of this Championships, at Manchester, so it kicked in for certain quarter-finals (Fred Davis v Alex Higgins was one such) and then the later stages of the final the following week. That's correct. Davis won the match 15-14.

Looking through my copy of Snooker Scene of June 1974, this quarter-final was described as the (match of the tournament)

Yeh it was an epic! It was the '74 q/final they shown on Grandstand. There are some highlights of it on one of Roger Lee's B&S Archive video's and it was played one of those white 'plastic' tables, lol. Belle Vue, Manchester was a huge venue, described as an 'air craft hanger' type place.

Higgins led 14-12 didn't he? Referee Jim Thorpe called him for a controversial 'push shot' and he lost his way thereafter.

And not the last time that a controversial decision against Alex Higgins by Jim Thorpe occurred. During the final of the 1980 Wilson Classic, Higgins was called for a foul by Thorpe when playing an ambitious screw shot on the yellow, which upset Higgins for the rest of the frame.

I think its fair to say the two of them never saw eye to eye..

I was not aware of this. I was under the impression only edited highlights of the final (Reardon/Miles) that was televised.
