  • Table at the end of the garden

    Hi guys

Any of you have a snooker room at the end of the garden? If so, please share pictures, specs and the process etc.

I have around a 8-10k budget.. Should I do it? Will I regret doing/not doing it..

Danger Steve has a step by step thread on here from last year showing how he did it ,snooker shed build I think it’s called ,with that budget I think you will be going down the wooden build road .you will need a minimum inside size of 22 feet by 16 .How much space do you have and does your budget involve buying and fitting the table .

      Thanks mikee.

I did look for existing posts but couldn't see any recent or finished. I'll have another search.

I could afford a bit more. Depending on what I get for the extra. The table I was thinking of 3-4k separate set aside for a steel block table. All in, a could do 12-15k. Maybe a bit more at a push.

Totally possible with that budget, first things first though..... How big is your garden, shape & square meterage? What size do you want the ‘shed’? Just big enough for the table and nothing else, or a proper man cave? Have you thought about planning restrictions? Building regulations? Are you in a conservation area? Is this a self build or are you paying builders? Have you thought about insulation and heating? Windows? Electrics? Etc etc

I look forward to your reply!

Thanks for the responses folks. Esp the link above. So, to answer some questions

I have a pretty long garden at the back. Rectangular. Around 9m X 14m.

I wouldn't be looking to do too much myself, although would definitely chip in as a labourer.

The kind of thing I was thinking.. https://www.snookercrazy.com/build-s...m-project-one/

I live in blustery Yorkshire. It gets especially windy and rains a lot, I'm just outside Halifax, very high up. So the breeze blocks and cladding makes me feel it would be best for insulation and the test of time? I'm not looking to have the room for anything else. A table in the centre. Maybe a couple of slim sofas / seats. Some well positioned storage cupboards and that's about it (maybe a dart board and a TV!) Windows and a door. Electrics and a heating option.

Don't live in a conservation area. 2.5m height would be fine with a sloped roof.

                Shed league sounds great actually!

I could get a fishing trip to the Calder and Wharfe past the missus and I’ll bring my cue as well as my rods

Sounds like your going to need planning to fit all that in! Which in turn means building regs... If your thinking a concrete slab and block work walls then really you need to get some quotes off some local builders I would say. Blocks on there own won’t be good enough, you’ll need some slab insulation, rockwool, Kingspan something like that, and plenty of it in your roof! If your going blocks with a cavity then maybe render on the outside rather than expensive wood cladding? Also I would recommend an insulated concrete slab if the budget allows it. Shop around for insulation, sometimes you get job lots come up on EBay for much less than buying new.

If you want to avoid the above then really your building should be max 30m2 (give or take ) which is pretty much a full size table and nothing else, like my own shed. Also building regs doesn’t apply to buildings up to this size, so you can make it out of whatever you like so long as it doesn’t take up more than 1/2 your garden, isn’t over 2.5m tall and is 1meter from your boundary line. Give local Building Control department and call and discuss what your thinking of building and they are usually Very helpful! The last thing you want is to build something and then have to take it down!

Itsnoteasy is currently in the middle of a snooker hotel complex project in his garden which needed planning so he will be better placed to advise on that aspect. If you go down the timber frame route without planning then I’m your man!

Do you have any photos of what you have? And how secure, watertight and insulated is your build?

If you are going bigger than 30 sq metres which is very very tight for a snooker table , roughly 21.5 ft x 15 ft internal, you need building regs. We had to go down that route and it involved getting detailed plans drawn up and a structural engineers report. In the open market if you don't know folk to help you, that is around 1k of your budget gone. If you are building in block it will need founds also insulation for the floor plus concrete for the slab , if that needs pumped in , for the insulation and concrete you will be looking at 2k or more. If you have to get skips to take the spoil away that will be ?500- ?1000 , that's roughly half your budget before you have laid a block. I would suggest if you don't have friends who can help and you are just hiring in brickies, sparkies etc 10k is less than half of what you need. Ours is 53 sq metres and will cost us around 15-17 k and that's pulling in favours from everyone we know.
sorry for such a negative post but this has been my experience. I can't help with the cost of building with block as we have gone down the timber route.

Thanks buddy. Absolutely don't see your comments as negative. Constructive, absolutely!

Looking at what Steve has built, it looks perfect. I'm actually tempted to ask him what it'd cost to get him over to build me the whole thing!

I've flirted with the idea of a table many times and have gave up on the idea many times, unfortunately. I am determined to get this moving this time around. Life is in a much better place and for me, snooker has been a saviour through periods of mental health issues.

All your help, comments and suggestions are much appreciated. And I am starting to think timber is the way forward

I reckon you could do it in timber for the top end of your budget around 15 k. You still need founds and block to tie in your slab . They ask for the blocks around the slab otherwise the slab is like a big raft floating on the surface. You then build a timber frame onto the blocks .
I was very similar to you, I looked into it for years , over five, but bottled it . Then as our club got in trouble three of us were going to rent a unit and stick a table in it. In the end up we decided to stick a shed in my pals garden.
I hope you do it, I don't think you will regret it, I can't wait, the founds are in and the brickie is doing the block work on Saturday, we had to build a block fire wall on one gable end as it backed onto a neighbour so that adds to the cost. I don't know what your neighbour situation is like. Best of luck , it's a life changing thing to have snooker on tap, anyone who can do it is very fortunate indeed.
A good Riley Aristocrat steel blocked table will be around 3k and around 6-800 to set up from scratch by experienced table fitters.
What Steve did is incredible, you have to take your hat off to him.
