      hit black with rest

In the majority of reported cases, the Court of Appeal upheld sentences of 7-12 months.

crucible7 is correct, foul 7 points and the yellow is re-spotted.

Had your brother handed the rest to a referee and the referee nudged the black whilst replacing it, then no foul. The black is re-placed in its original position and the yellow remains off of the table.

          Are you sure?

Surely, once the yellow has gone down and the cue-ball has come to rest, that shot is over and the player is now on the green. Therefore he scores the 2 for the yellow, and he is fouled, 7 points, for a foul on the green which ends his turn immediately but he still scores for strokes already completed during the break.

If the balls were still moving from the yellow shot, I would agree with you.

I have re-read the first post, and it actually says "cue came to rest" but I was assuming it was a typo for "cue ball came to rest"

Well, if all the balls have come to rest, then the shot on the yellow has come to an end and it must be allowed to stand because no foul has taken place.

Once the balls have come to rest the player is then on the green and, if the rest hits the black, that's a foul on the green – 7 points because of the black's involvement – so the striker would score 2 for legally potting the yellow, with no infringement of the rules; and then be fouled 7 for touching the black when on the green. In these circumstances there are no grounds for the yellow's being respotted because it has been legally potted in the ascending order of the colours once the reds have gone.

I hear what you are saying Statman and it sounds very very right to me ... I guess my only slight concern would be, OK he's potted the yellow and the cueball has come to rest but has he actually addressed the green? and does that make any difference in this case? ie when "he" is still on a break ...

[edit] ... ie, did he foul *after* potting the yellow or did he foul *before* potting the green? there must be a difference surely?

i believe until the rest gets removed safetly off the table after the shot the shot is not complete..

therefore If a player pots the Yellow ball in this instance and while removing the rest touches The Black the shot isnt compleated therefore its Foul 7 and the yellow ball respoted.
