  • Rules question...Ball on cannot be hit

I understand, (rule 14-a- ii) that if it is IMPOSSIBLE to hit a ball on, I must play AS IF to hit the ball on (sufficient force etc.) Suppose the ball on is yellow, but the white ball is "trapped" in a corner pocket, totally boxed in by the black and pink. I play, hitting the pink, as if to hit the yellow (ball on). I understand that the MISS rule is not in effect in this situation. My question is: Is this a 6-point foul, (pink ball hit) or a 4-point foul?

Also, while I'm at it...after this stroke, (I know there is no MISS RULE in effect)...is the free ball rule in effect?

6 point foul ,free ball rule is in play ,if I’m understanding your question correctly.

      Mikee is correct

But in addition - a Miss is always possible

Remember the first line of Rule 3.14(a)
"The striker shall, to the best of their ability, endeavour to hit the ball on..." if you do not - in the opinion of the referee - play in such an attempt to hit the ball on a Miss can be called.

"Attempt" means to strike the cue ball in a direction and strength that it would hit the ball on if the obstruction was not there.(Rule 3.14(a)(ii) 2nd para).
The wording of the rule is to stipulate that a Miss WONT be called purely because the ball on was not the first contact of the cue ball - in fairness of the situation.
BUT all players are under the stipulation to play to their best ability always - if they don't, Miss.

"Free ball" - again yes, if after any stroke a Foul is called and the cue ball is snookered to the ball on a Free Ball is called. (Rule 3.12)

        I have another questioon.

If all color spots but black are covered and i pot the blue ball (whose spot is taken by red) and also foul(6) by potting the pink ball(spot also covered by red) . Which one of the 2 colors goes to black spot and which one would go to the nearest to its spot along the centre line?

Any Colours that can go on their own spots go on their own spots.
Any balls left over, the highest value ball goes on the highest value unoccupied spot, then next value ball on the next value spot, etc.
Any Colour ball left with no spot to occupy, then that will go as close to its own spot without touching any other ball longitudinally to the "top cushion" (Black cushion).

I say "longitudinally" as the Yellow and Green or not "on the centre line"

DeanH Thanks. Now I too have learned longitudinally, never crossed my mind that one could think laterally, literally. My mistake!
