  • Triple Crown Winners

Any one know why Ronnie doesn`t have a gold crown on his waistcoat?
He has won more triple crown events than any other player, but appears to be the only winner that does not wear the crown πŸ€”

Because he's too cool for school and thinks badges are for Brownies and girl guides.

      Personal choice …
Some people also believe it’s just made up by BBC to attract viewers. The β€˜triple crown’ never existed back in the day for the same events .

I thought it could be something like that, but I haven't ever heard him comment about it & its not like him to object silently to things lol ..... He did apparantly ask how many crowns they wanted to put on his πŸ˜‚

I don’t think John Higgins wears it either, which is odd. The two most successful players still playing choose not to wear it.

The BBC wanted to introduce some sort of major championship tournament thing into snooker like tennis and golf ,so the BBC commentators started calling their events the big three , majors , and triple crown events etc. If they keep saying enough it must be true ,it’s all bollox really .

Well, I don't think there is a shadow of a doubt that the Worlds, the UK and the Masters are by far are the most prestigious (and hardest to win) tournaments on the circuit, let alone the all the snooker history behind them.

It's a rather dumb thing to conspiratorially imply that this is made thing by the "BBC commentators", sorry mikee. Nothing ranks higher among the players, all players.

Ronnie literally plays to win one of these every season he keeps playing, just for his resume, just to get further in front of Hendry. And of course he loudly and repeatedly decided not to wear the badge when they were introduced because he's quite a narcissistic personality and he needs to reassure how "special" and different from all the other triple crown winners he is... which he is, but not always in a completely pleasant way
                  "That pocket moved!"

You are of course correct that these three tournaments are the most prestigious in snooker, however this is not the point being made. It's the coining of the phrase "triple crown" which has been created by the BBC to summarise these three great tournaments. It annoys some of us because it wasn't necessary. Maybe you have to be from the UK to understand why the BBC annoys us sometimes Neuronic.

You're surely right, CC. While I don't share it, I totally get the annoyance, but still I don't think it's justified... "triple crown, "big three" or whatever, are just different phrases for something that already consensually existed but hasn't been named.

I think a big part of being annoyed by something like this is age and the (more or less unconscious) grudge towards things changing vs one's habitual reality... and I'm guilty of that, too

I have to say it doesn’t go as far as to annoy me . I just see it as what it is ….. a marketing ploy.
Maybe that’s because I’m a youngster compared to the likes of Cue Crafty and others on here

Lolz yes you are right again! For me personally it was when I heard Hazel Irvine start to refer to these tournaments as triple crown events as if they had always been called that. I was sitting listening and thinking why is she calling them that, isn't that a Rugby or horse racing thing!?!

For me personally, the world championship stands alone and is head and shoulders above the UK and the Masters and therefore shouldn't be cobbled together with them for a convenient phrase.

For me, the tournament on now should be above the masters. Its the top sixteen on the one year list, so the best players on current form. That should make it harder to win than the masters.
