  • Another bit of unfairness

How can Jack Lisowski have to play again so soon after his match against Robertson. Seems totally unfair to me as the others have had time to put their feet up and wind down a little.

Luck of the draw and your seeding!
John Higgins, Judd Trump, Stuart Bingham were all playing yesterday as well, so Jack is not being picked on

Yes it's a shame, it's got to be difficult after an epic match to regain your focus and go again so quickly and that's evident this afternoon I think. It's the nature of the beast though and the way the cookie crumbles means it's the luck of the draw involved too.

Only way to look at it I guess, is as Hendry does and that is that it's the World Championship so you get your sleep and you "get up for it" no matter what.

and then some players want to get on with it and dont want any days not playing

It wasn’t that late a night for Jack. Would have got to bed at a reasonable hour after all his post match interviews. Could have had a long lie this morning if he wanted and a leisurely breakfast. Full English if he wanted. Still got time for a bit of practice before a 2.30 start.

Exactly, he didn't have to get up at 4.30 am and go out digging ditches

I was looking at the schedule last night trying to work out how it affects Higgins in QF3 and I have no idea how it works but it looks like winners of QF1 and QF2 will ultimately conclude the SF session in the afternoon meaning the winners of QF3 and QF4 will be playing the concluding session of their SF matches in the evening session so they have less time to prepare and the buzz of getting to the final could make it hard to sleep.

Does anyone know stats on how many winners have been in QF1/2 and QF3/4 to see if there is a pattern? How does the draw and seeding affect if a player will be in QF1/2 or QF3/4?

Top half will be QF 1 and 2, bottom half will be 3 and 4. It's not something you can really plan for, because the top half will have seeds 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, 13 and 16, and the bottom half will have 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14 and 15. There is a bit of luck involved.

Just to add to that, I've checked the last 30 editions of the World Championship. Assuming the match schedule has stayed the same throughout this period, the winner of the earlier SF went on to win the final 13 times, while the other player won it 17 times. So it doesn't seem to make much of a difference. Higher seed won 19 out of 30 by the way, although there were some years where the higher seed wasn't objectively the better player, in my opinion.

he and higgins did get the short straw / or preferable draw depending on which way you or a player is looking or feels at it in that they play their 2nd and 3rd sessions in successive sessions today due to start at 1430 and 1900 , it happens to one quarter final match every year , this year it was theirs.

i worked in groundwork for a while recently , with all this health and safety and awareness nowadays i was struck by how relatively comfortable it was , wasn't foreboding or difficult at all.

Cheers for the interesting stats Odrl 👍 That surprises me and suggests the players would prefer to get on with it rather than have a days break between the semi final and final as it wouldn't make much difference and could even affect the momentum of the tournament. The tension builds up each day until that moment of lifting the trophy but I like the idea of a 3rd/4th playoff for the losing semi finalists. With so much travelling the players do they must have fine tuned how to get a natural good nights sleep and I remember one player saying they always stay at the same B&B which is quiet and out of the way. I think it was Stuart Bingham but I'm sure all players have their own traditions and routine to ensure a peaceful nights slumber. It must be difficult for the finalists to know they have earned a guaranteed extra £100,000 and potentially an extra £400,000 if they win and nod off with that racing about in their minds.
