  • Was the referee correct?

This happened in an amateur snooker tournament ten years ago.

The player was at the table on a break. After potting a red, he was shaping up to pot the brown into a baulk pocket as his colour. The brown was on its spot but the yellow was not and the yellow was closer to the brown than usual, two or three inches away.

    The referee said, 'Please nominate'.

    The player sarcastically replied 'Pink!'.

The pink ball was on its spot at the other end of the table. The player was obviously not intending to pot the pink as he had his back to it. The referee said nothing.

The player continued aiming at the brown and potted the brown into a baulk pocket.

'Foul' called the referee, '6 points away'.

The player remonstrated 'Foul!? I was on the brown and I potted the brown'.

'Yes, but you nominated the pink and failed to make contact with the pink'.

'When I said 'pink' I was obviously being sarcastic because it was clear to everyone I was aiming at the brown.'

'The yellow ball was near the brown, so I asked you to nominate.'

'The yellow was nowhere near the brown!'

'Look, if you continue to dispute my decision you will forfeit the frame.'

'You're the worst referee I have ever seen.'

'Alright, game over. Frame and match to your opponent.'

Was the referee right to award frame and match against the player in this case?

If the referee asks you to nominate because there's more than one ball in the general area aimed for, the player has to confirm which ball they are going for. I don't know what this player expected. Why would anyone risk a foul to be a smart arse, even if they think the ref is being pedantic? With regards the forfeit, it's not like they weren't warned.

Sounds like a easy answer to me indeed, if he nominated Pink, jokingly or not doesn't matter, he should have hit the pink.
So yes the referee was correct, of course.
