  • Rough Cue

Hi chaps, a belated Happy New Year to you all.

I have a straight grained Pro Butt Master Cue and, for some reason it has become quite rough along the centre part of the top section. It seems as though there are miniscule ridges in this section of the cue and I'm wondering what would be the best course of action to get it smooth again.

Fortunately the area of the cue where it runs through my bridge is unaffected but, I am constantly irritated by the feel of the rough part when I am not at the table. What I don't know is, what the cue has been finished with, varnish, oil or polish.

Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thank you.

It could be that the grain on this section of the shaft has been raised by some kind of interaction with dampness, or simply it's dirty and needs a clean. You can remove this using 0000 grade steel wool, clean off any steel fibres with a cloth dampened in white spirit and then when dry give it some love with a wax furniture polish to seal it. Such a cue as a Master Cue will not be varnished, it will be oil or wax finished and a little wax on top of an oil finish is fine, and vice versa.
Speak up, you've got to speak up against the madness, you've got speak your mind if you dare
but don't try to get yourself elected, for if you do you'll have to cut your hair

Thank you vmax, much appreciated. I will get to work on it tomorrow morning. I have some very good quality wax that I have used when making the odd piece of furniture.

My thought is that the area affected is where you holding the cue when waiting for your turn
        Up the TSF! :snooker:
