Preferred Tip Size and Brand??

@Liquidsymphony - Not sure about the hardness between pigskin and buffalo leather. Buffalo leather is normally used for the pressed tips, although I think Talisman are starting to do layered/laminated using it now. If anyone tries one, maybe they can let us know.

Just one question, is 14mm tip too big to trim and be well on snooker sized ferule?

I ask this because I read somewhere that is better that tip is originally on ferule size, or little bit thicker for less trim as possible.
In store near to me there's pretty much good tips but for billiard cue size, they also have Kamui but really too expensive... but they have Talisman WB, with good price (about 5 GBP) and I would like to try this one, but it's only in 14 mm size. Is it ok to trim this on 9,5 mm?

I think the 14mm tips have more layers as they are made for pool. (9 ball) This game uses much heavier balls, so the tips need to be harder to have similar effect. In terms of trimming down, it still can be done, but the tip would be a lot harder than an 11mm. Try ordering an 11mm from online. These will still allow for trimming down, as even large tips on snooker cues don't normally go over 11mm.

very much so yes. ive played with a talisman wb hard and the tips is very hard, its like having a marble stuck on the tip of the cue lol. given a choice out the 2 tips i would go for a kamui.

phoenix seem's to be buffalo leather too , i'm waiting for one , ordered few days ago so we'll see

i've always used superglue gel to prevent the glue from going inside the fibers of the tip that much .not sure glue could be the problem

ok.played for about 3 hours with my new phoenix soft tip . first time i'm not desapointed by a layered tip . first of all (for me ) it's close from elks that have already been used several hours , so it was great
no problem concerning deep screws or massive spins , the tip grip nicely .
someone here said that laminated tips do not hold chalk properly : it was the case too , but it's a new one so maybe in the future it will , as it is not perfectly shapped , and anyway i tried to play many shots without chalk , never went to misscue.concerning the shappe of the tip, if has'nt changed yet , no mushrooming but 3 hours is not that much and i spent lot if time in my chair as my mate kicked my a** tonight ( only hardly managed a 43 highest break )

laminated tips tend to not need the chalk as much either.

If you dont like hard tips, I would stay clear of laminated.

Have you tried MW supertips?

In my earliest post on this subject I mentioned I was using a Blue Velvet, that was a trial as I like soft tips but these turned out to be too soft. As I change tips so often expensive ones are out of the question so I will stick to Elkmaster and change them as often as I feel is needed. Can get really cheap deals on ebay for boxes of Elks, my last box was only twenty quid for 50 tips, bargain compared to Kamui or Talisman and as I also re-tip friends cues and charge a couple of quid a time the cost is negligible.

played last night , 4 hours , and my phoenix soft still play nicely , it's a lil' harder than when first used as i think it's now more compressed but it still ok , maybe still slightly too hard for my game but nothing compare to the hardness of so called soft layered tips like moori . i'm still not convinced by layered tips anyway , i think that it was my last experiment as i will go back to elks again even if for the first time i'm not desapointed ( maybe i was'nt expecting that much after many attempts LOL ) , i'm even impressed by the way this tip decrease deflection but it deffinetly do not suit my game . for the same price you can have a dozen of elks . price would not be a problem if results was great but it's not the case ( for me )
don't get me wrong i don't mean that these tips do not worth their price but some players like me could be desapointed . try differents tips anyway ,to find the right one and make your own opinion .

well only played for 7 hours in total so maybe i'll get used to this tip . at least the way this phoenix tip plays don't make me want to remove it immediatly as it happened in the past with moori soft or else that was playing as great as if you had nothing on your ferule : hard as steel :s

Well I tried the phoenix soft tip out and much to my disappointment after about 5 hours play a layer came off when I tried to give it a little re-shape..... I realise this must have a just been a bad tip and I've decided to put an aurora tip on. And first impressions are really good I'm well happy with it, Ive tried quite a few tips out in the last month or so and imo the MW super tips and aurora tips have been the best for me by quite some margin......

My regular playing partner put a Pheonix on a few weeks back, lasted an hour i think before de laminating....

I dont have one on my new cue yet but i played about 15 hours with it on my old cue and it was great. Its really hard which i like but im sure some would hate. Quite difficult to chalk also. Doesnt seem to go into the tip but sit on it. No problem with miss cues though.

The sounds on softer shots is very tinny due to its hardness which might also put some people off but i didnt mind.

Pretty sure i'll put one on when the elk ( i think its an elk) wears on my new cue. I would change it straight away but its been put on so well i dont just want to rip it off!
