there is no such thing as a best tip......everyone has different choices in tips.

The best tip is the one that works best for you

as loopy says "there's no best tip" ... try a Blue Diamond if you think a softer tip will suit you ... try an ElkMaster if you think something a little bit harder is your thing ...

as you improve, you may want to try other tips which you may find better or worse but there's definitely nothing wrond with either BD or Elk ...

my current personal preference is a softer tip such as a BD for UK 8-ball and a slightly harder tip such as an Elk for snooker (requires two cues!) but I reserve the right to change my mind!

or, of course, put on something more expensive if you want ... snooker is a game of both skill and confidence ... if you think putting a £5 tip on your cue will give you the confidence, go for it!

[edit] oops that last para sounds a bit condescending but it's not meant to be ... I too try different tips but to be honest, it's not the tip at the front of the cue that worries me most ... it's the tit at the butt end!

I am new to the form and spent some time reading threw a number of posts. This one caught my interest because over the last 20 years I have tinkered with a lathe and cues. Up until my latest tip(EM) I have used different brands of laminated since they started to produce them for the pool market. Almost all the tips have been 13 to 14mm before cutting them down to 9.5. When Talisman first came out they had a glue problem and some would unravel when shaping them. Back then they would replace the tip at no cost, I am not certain if this is still their policy. From lurking on other groups I have seen it stated that a very sharp bit is a most when using a lathe. Also I have found that having the speed of the lathe turned down. With a sharp bit and slow speed the tip does not seem to heat up and cause the glue to become pliable.

I am curious if anyone has tried a milk dud tip. People have been soaking elkmasters in milk, then compressing them before installing them. Most people that have tried it, have praised the tip. I found some elkmasters, that 15 years ago I had soaked in Neatsfoot for a few months then compressed. At some point I will try one, they feel quite firm.

For the most part I am pleased with both the medium or soft laminated tips, but curious to see what the EM will feel like after so many years. Some say that the surface of a laminated tip has too much glue as compared to leather, in contact with the cue ball.

              Mike

I have a Peradon with I think a blue diamond on it.............However, I just recently put a SUPER TIP on and am very pleased with it. In my opinion it gives the cue an entirely different feel.

Tips are like relationships....some are great, some are terrible. But one thing you can be sure of................is they all wear thin in the end!!!

This could be why Mike Wooldridge tips are so good and so expensive. I hear he soaks them in the milk from the breast of a virgin.

Do virgins, or even women who have never had children produce breast milk?

I have heard him mentioned as a a very good cue maker but to get breast milk from a virgin may be stretching it a little. but then again its not really my field.

I do have it on good authority tho that ADR finishes his cues on the thighs of virgins
