Spin problems

I just bought a new cue but can't seem to get much spin with it (top and side spin are actually fine- I just can't get any backspin). I shaped the tip into a nice dome which helped a little bit, but it still isn't great. I know my technique is fine because I have no problems getting spin with other cues. Just wondering if a different tip might help, maybe a softer one might get a better grip on the cue-ball?

Any ideas?

How much did the cue cost? It may not have a very good tip on it. As to the soft / hard tip, its down to personal preference which you choose. Check out ADRs tip guide for info on hwo to change the tip and what tips are available.

I think your new cue has different balancepoint and weight-> your old timing is not so effective now. Sorry my bad language!

I reckon you might be right, it's a fairly cheap Riley cue, it cost about £35 I think. I'll take a look at that tip guide, thanks a lot.

The tip makes a huge difference. It is often said it is better to have a "bad" cue with a good tip than a good cue with a bad tip. Buy a good quality tip (ADR is a good bet for this too).

I assumed you had allready changed new tip for the cue-> the problem could not be in tip. I agree what Harrris303 said, tips hardnes and shape are the common reason for lack of spin if the technique is solid.
