Not sure that I will ever get back to making breaks again! After having had 36 years without playing and been trying again for around four weeks now, cannot seem to get any cue action back. It is driving me mad. What makes it harder, is the fact that have put over two stone in weight on, and now my pecs get in the way ... lol.
That is one of the probs with being quite short for this game, but I once had quite a good cue action.

Back Exercises
I appreciate the concern which is been rose. The things need to be
sorted out because it is about the individual but it can be with
everyone.

Just a couple of 30+ breaks last night. Though i have to say i was cueing really well for the first half of the match, and then my confidence seemed to desert me and inevitably it all went pear shaped from there on in.."Statistics won't tell you much about me. I play for love, not records."

This week I've had a handful of 30s to complement my high of 42. Desperately looking forward to a change in these hostile weather conditions though...
Spent last week in Portugal, which was easily my best break for ages.

on off form
I have been playing almost everyday for 10 months now after laying off for the past 20 years,,,,,during the last 6 months I know I have been improving on everything I suppose to do.My highest break is only 38 3 months ago and i have probelms getting back to the form which i had the past 2 months and been playing badly ever since and today i cannot even pocket a 6 feet straight ball......I am struggling wit my GRIP that is my main concern cos sometimes I hold the BUTT full like RONNIE and sometimes I hold it wit 3 fingers only,,,,I cannot focus on my grip and struggle during play...wat should I do? I play wit some customers at my par only.......and I coach myself cos theres is better player but they gamble most of the time....so i always be myself most of the time and wondering is my LUST for snooker is coming to and end or I just cannot learn anymore???I just ordered a PARRIS ELITE cue after 25 years of loving snooker and it still in the making process and Im already kind of giving up.....thanks

1. Confidence
2. Timing (And this is probably linked with confidence anyways)
If your concerned about your grip then you need to spend some time practicing that before you play a game of snooker. During any game dont start thinking of your grip as this will throw your confidence levels. Just accept that you've put some time on your grip in practice and concentrate fully on the game in hand.
As for timing if im honest only a qualified coach or a good player in your club can teach you that, it cant be explained over the internet you have to see it being done and feel the difference for yourself in your own technique.
My high break before I started coaching was 39. Then i started some coaching lessons with an ex pro 6 months ago. Every time theres a good chance on now I'll be knockin in 40s & 50s.
It is worth the money find a coach or a good player to help you and your game will improve.

Although the grip is important, there are many variations out there with all of them being good AS LONG AS THEY ARE LOOSE.
For instance, Ronnie actually grips the cue with his middle 2 fingers, Steve Davis is using the last 3 fingers right now (similar to Alex Higgins), Mark Allen uses a very loose grip with the front 3 fingers and his baby finger is tucked up into his palm and never touches the cue.
The way most coaches teach the grip is called the 'hammer grip', which means literally, lay the cue on the table and pick it up as if you were going to beat someone over the head with it, just like you would hold a hammer. However, the actual pressure on the cue should be a lot less than using a hammer.
What's important to remember is as long as you can control the cue and your grip is loose and comfortable it is likely just fine and don't worry about it
By the way, it's likely not the grip that's causing you to deliver the cue off-straight. Look for head movement or else check your aiming method and make sure you are getting down into the shot straight with no lateral (sideways) movement and no aiming adjustments once you are down at the table.
