this is a bit of weird one,

I seem to go through blocks of chalk very quickly, is there a certain way to chalk your tip, or just do it the way I have been?

Well, if you brush the chalk from the edges (flat bits) then you can still chalk your tip well but without getting through it too quickly. As it gets lower you can find the part of 'least wear' and chalk with that part, if it's the flat parts next to the 'hole' or whatever.

Maybe you're chalking too much, or with too much pressure. Just a light brush of the chalk on the tip is usually enough after each shot.

I usually chalk my cue ONCE after every shot if this helps?

Just to clarify, whne you say your chalk is worn out so you mean a big hole in the centre and is no longer usable or you use the whole block? I tend to look at my chalk and try and use the whole block uniformly. If one side is lower than the other i try and use the other side for a while until its level again.

The problem may be chalk weevil. They are quite common in dry climates, burrowing into the chalk making it porous. This causes it to rapidly turn to dust when used. They are difficult to spot, but the best way is to carefully take off all the paper then look for holes with a magnifying glass. A block of chalk should normally last 72 years, so if you are going through them faster than this, you probably have an infestation. Hope this helps.

Quite so 100-uper, I noticed this in a friend's block, a couple of minutes in the microwave stops the rot, but make sure the chalk is dry first.
