  • Rules Question

I'm interested to see the debate on this one.

    The scenario:

Your opponent makes a foul (and there are still reds on the table)
You are awarded a free ball
You nominate a colour as your red
    You miss your nominated colour
A 'foul and a miss' is called
You are put back in to the original position

The question: do you still have a free ball are are you on a red?

[A recent meeting on European tutors and examiners was split almost 50/50!]

    10. Snookered After a Foul

    ...
    (f) If the offender is asked to play again, the free ball call becomes void.
    ...

It doesn't say if the player who has the free ball, fouls, does it become void?

My guess is that it does, but I'm interested to hear what others have to say.

10(f) only refers to the player committing the original foul being asked to play again.

You are still on the free ball. You are playing the same stroke.

You can change your mind as to what colour to go for, but it is still a free ball. If you miss the colour again and the ball's replaced, you will be warned that a third miss will lose you the frame.
You are only the best on the day you win.

That's my interpretation, but as I say half of those present (who were all senior examiners/tutors from across Europe) thought you lost the right to a free ball and red became the ball on.

To my mind having the balls replaced after a Miss has been called puts you back into exactly the same position as you were originally, as if you were replaying the original stroke. Therefore the free ball call is still extant.
