I find Stevens an odd case.
He was never good enough to run with the big four - Hendry, O'Sullivan, Williams and Higgins, and you'd think that he'd be part of the lower echelon of players - Ebdon, Doherty. But with 174 career centuries, I'd think it would be appropiate to lump him in with players like Lee and MacManus; talented (albeit somewhat wasted) but just lacked something to run with the better players.
Fair enough things more than likely would of changed if he did win the WC, but even without that, he really hasn't won tournaments at a frequency like Doherty or Ebdon either.
After all that, I highly doubt the we'll see him back in the top 16.

he is such a good all round player and he makes a serious amount of money during even a bad year why would he retire?

Depends on how well he is doing I guess, he's said himself that to him snooker isn't the be all and end all and that he'd not find it that difficult to hang up his cue if the decision ever faced him.
I don't get the impression that he's the sort of character who would plod along into the future just for the sake of it if he wasn't competitive.sigpic
