What Exactly is A Match-Player?

I hear this phrase thrown around a lot and I'm not exactly sure what it means.

John Higgins is a great match player, he plays the correct shots at the correct time, puts his opponent in difficult positions and has good tactics. It isn't easy to describe but basically it means players who have good tactics, good at matches.
