  • What happens if cue ball is surrounded!?!?

    Pot red.
Cue ball goes into the pack and a red caroms back to enclose the cueball.
No way to play on a colour without hitting a red.
What can possibly happen in this circumstance?
What is the correct shot and outcome?

    Thanks.

Thanks Rob... yes, it does somewhat explain that predicament.
Is my understanding correct that if I nominate say... yellow, and in a logical line as though there were no obstructing reds hit the cueball with enough pace to have reached the yellow... then regardless of hitting a red enroute, it is a Foul but not a Miss?

I think that was the conclusion everyone came to. As long as you hit in a direct line towards your intended colour with sufficient pace it should be a foul but not a miss.

          Yes. But.....

If you imagine the cue-ball resting in the centre of the pack, surrounded by reds, such that the pink was preventing any theoretical direct path to the yellow. I would still call a Miss if the yellow was nominated and the player played in a direction that would clearly have hit the pink.

The rule states that the player must be assumed to have made a genuine attempt but for the obstructing balls. Take those obstructing reds away and the yellow would still not have been hittable.

Call pink in the same situation and it will be a foul (of course) but no Miss.

Which means you would nominate a yellow, green or brown providing an un-colour-obstructed route... so as to only lose 4 points?

Yes but it would be a Miss so could be replaced – you're better off nominating pink for 6 away but no Miss; plus probably you'd hit a softer shot to theoretically reach the pink, thus giving away 6 instead of 4 but spreading the reds less far for a potential opening for the opponent than if you hit it hard enough for the yellow.
