  • Whose Lost the Most Finals?

Its a well known snooker fact that Jimmy White lost 6 WC finals, but overall, I'm curious as to who has lost the most - this maybe one for Statman. On face value and my consistent visits to wikipedia, I'd think that John Higgins and Ken Doherty would be rather high up on the list, I've seen there names as being runner-ups rather often, I'd assume that White, with his 6 lost WCs would feature high up too.

Stephen Hendry has lost more ranking finals than those three you mentioned. Although, he has won quite a few finals too But I don't know if he tops the list.. And I'm only talking about ranking finals.

Really? How many has he lost. As I said above, just on face value, I'd assume that Higgins and Doherty lost a fair few, but I guess when you win as much as Hendry, you'd lose a lot too.

I guess looking at the ratio finals lost/finals reached would be more interesting, so if anyone answers this, please include both figures

I checked 'Ranking finals summary' from Stats. Hendry has lost 22 ranking tournament finals (if I counted right), Higgins has lost 13 finals. Doherty and White has lost about as many as Higgins.

Hendry has lost the most(21), but of course has been in by far the most finals. White has lost 14 and John Higgins and Davis have lost 13. Then Doherty with 11, O'Sullivan with 10. Williams win record of when he gets to the later stages of tournaments is impressive.

            Ranking performance summary

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following table lists all the 144 players who have reached at least one ranking quarter-final, ranked in order of performance: they are sorted firstly by number of ranking titles, secondly by finals, then by semi-finals and then by quarter-finals.

Updated to 2009 China Open – the players have been re-sorted in the order stated above but the Position column has not been recalculated (and is the remnants of the correct figure at the end of the 2007-08 season).

I'm not doubting you - but looks like 21 on Statman's list. 36 wins out of 57 finals, which implies he has missed one which would be unusual.

If you check the "Ranking Finals Summary" from STATS and count it from there you get 22.

from his first World Title to his last he won 26 Titles and lost in 10 finals....

since his last World Championship he has won 5 and lost 9 finals.

that what has happened to make his win/lose record in finals a bit false but to reach that many finals in the last 10 years only Ronnie/Higgins and Williams has surpassed that feat.

Yes, I got 22 as well, so if that's right it should be 36 titles out of 58 (instead of 57)

I make it 21 in the list at http://www.thesnookerforum.com/board...ead.php?t=7112

Other players with especially good/bad records in finals:
Good: Ray Reardon (5/6), Neil Robertson & Ding Junhui (both 3/3)
Bad: Cliff Thorburn (2/10), Matthew Stevens (1/7), Ryan Day (0/3)

I think Dott holds the record of most finals before his first triumph with four but Day isn't too far behind. Stevens' record in finals is appalling.
