Feathering relates to the action of swinging the cue backwaards and forwards in preparation to playing a shot and refers specifically to when a player swings the cue forward too much and accidentally strikes the cue-ball, usually a very short distance. A foul, of course, unless the white happens to hit a nearby red!

The ferrule is the small brass fitting at the end of the cue, onto which the tip is fastened.

The splice (correct me, someone, if I'm wrong) is the usually darker wood part of the cue, with the zigzag shaped join to the other part.

A mini-butt is the short extension that can be attached to the cue when a player wants to play a shot that is just too far away for him to reach properly – so he needn't use the rest. A lot of players have one that is just a few inches long but a couple of players have a longer one, maybe up to a foot.

Just adding to what Statman has said.

Main splice is the wood that makes up the butt. This can be either handspliced, or machine spliced. Not meaning to complicated things, but handspliced has round points and is made of 4 pieces of timber. Machine spliced is 1 piece of timber that attaches to the shaft and produces points.

Also a splice can be refered to as the decorative splice. These can either be simple single splices or extremely complex designs.

you need to know about the butt plug too...

its a bit of plastic or wood depending on choice that you can attach to the hole where you can screw in extensions
