  • Can anyone score higher than 148 - ever?

I was thinking about Jamie Burnette's break of 148 back in 2004. It has gone 5 years now and no one has come close to break that record, even though a 147 is superb But what do you guys think? Do you think someone will break that record of 148 points made by Burnette? I am not sure to be honest. I think that the record will last for a long time...and it may never be broken

I have to be clear that I mean in professional play at the Main Tour

Yes, but in practise...remember I asked in professional play at the Main Tour
It's a big difference between practise and match, trust me

Well you obviously needs a bit of luck to get started, but after that Í think it is easier than doing a 147. To get over 148 you can affort to take a blue or pink, if you´re not precisely on the black ball, but I guess it will be broken some day. I think it will fall before Ronnie O´Sullivans speed record.

There have been a few breaks over 147 although they have all been in practise or exhibition matches. I reckon there will be a 150+ break one day in pro competition, but I doubt there will ever be a 155. Leaving a free ball at the start of a frame is pretty unusual but probably happens maybe one or twice a year so the opportunity will be there every season, and given enough seasons someone will eventually crack it, but leaving it in conditions where a maximum is on is probably a no-go.

I can't see why it wouldn't happen. Of course as already stated you need some luck to start with it, and preferably start with free ball and high colour, but then it's a total clearance and total clearances of 141 and above have been done regularly...

I know a 155 has not been made in a main tour tournament but many years ago Kirk Stevens (he of the white waistcoat to hide the powder )has been on at least 2. I think one of them was well into the colours before it broke down.

This does raise a very silly scenario which the snooker buffs and referees among us will (and do) debate into the small hours.

The highest possible break in snooker is...................infinite.

                          How?????????????

Make yourself a large whiskey and get comfy.
This is a tale. A very tall tale. It will never ever happen (I hope) but in theory.............

You have an incredibly dopey referee who doesn't know the highest available break in a normal game of snooker (155 by the way) add a fully comatose audience and 2 players who don't care.

The problem starts when the striker pots a red followed by the brown.
The referee takes the red out of the pocket instead of the brown and 'spots' it. the striker pots another red and the cue ball goes round the table knocking the red off the brown spot. The referee then notices that there is no brown on the table and realises why but also has no idea which red he had mistaken for the brown. This means he cannot remove the 16th red. You cannot just remove any red so this now becomes a 16 red frame.
So you could see that if this problem continued throughout the next couple of hours, the highest break available would raise a few eyebrows.

I remember Kirk Stevens making 107 in the 1984 Yamaha tournament against Mike Watterson. He started with the brown after his free-ball red and followed it with 11 reds - 11 blacks. 2 more reds followed with pinks before he missed the penultimate red - trying to keep on the black. Kirk had made only the third televised 147 (at the time) just a month before in the Masters and in his post-match interview with Dickie Davies he justified his reason for trying to finish off the last 2 reds with blacks so he "could make 150".
This was nearly 26 years ago and is the closest a major televised event has come to recording 148 or over.
I doubt I will see it ever happen. How often does the situation arise in televised snooker to make it possible?

I've seen a free ball called with all the reds still on the table. It does happen two or three times a season.

But how often do you make a total clearance... And to get a 155, you'd also need a chance to pot free ball + black straight away, which could be tricky as well, as the cue ball would usually be in baulk.
