    Thank you

Just like to thank all those who have replyed. I seem to have sorted the problem by tucking my bridge arm shoulder in tight to the side of my face.
My potting has gone mentle and I've had my second 80 in as many days.
I hope this can help some other players who might be expriencing the same kind of problem.
PS: cuing up and down the spots nicely now

I suspect since bringing the left shoulder over and down you have aligned everything on the line of aim of the cue so there is no tendency to cue across the ball when moving the cue with the elbow (in reality the muscle on the back of your upper right arm, not sure what it's called)

Terry. I often play against my dad who has casually been playing snooker for a very long time now but he is REALLY struggling recently.

He is right handed and has always held the cue way towards the right side of his face and practically near his ear. This means the cue is much too far from the body and the cue is delivered way across the line. Sometimes I get to the table after his shot and the white is still spinning due to horrendous unwanted side! I know you would advocate cueing straight from under the chin and keeping everything in line etc but is there anything you could think of to improve the situation? He is too set in his ways now to make any radical changes but i'd like to get him back into the low 20's at least again to make our games closer and stop him being so grumpy

I'm pretty sure there is a professional who sets up very similar to this (Joe Swail?). How does he manage to get the cue striaght through the line like this?

There is a best way of standing, sighting and everything else in snooker. However if you are cueing straight though and sighting the ball correctly you can stand one one leg holding the cue like joe swail.
It sounds like your problem has sorted out now due to the good advise given to you in this thread but the only way to fix it long term is to video yourself or get some coaching from a serious coach (not the guy down the club that chages £10 an hour).
Also if you are putting right hand side on the ball it doesn't always push left, soft and hard shots will move differently. If your striking down on the ball even a bit you might gentley swerve the white causing right hand side to move the ball right.
Forget it, Donny, you're out of your element

            saddler:

Man, you ask some difficult ones, but don't despair. If your father is willing to put in just a little bit of work and watch a couple of videos and do a little reading I think I can help both him and perhaps a lot of others reading this.

First of all, Nic Barrow and myself did 2 - one hour videos on the proper approach to the shot and the correct cueing technique (I was the bad example here as this was a year ago when I had all my 11 faults). These 2 videos can be found at - www.thesnookergym.com/terrydf1 - and - www.thesnookergym.com/terrydf2 - and if you have a high-speed internet connection watch them as they are free (and are worth every penny!).

Also, I have an MS Word document here on my computer which lays out the 10 or 11 steps in plain language and step-by-step and if you PM me your email address I will forward this to you. You should print it out and take it to the club with you and your dad.

A word of caution though, I will have to review my Word document and do a little editing and refining, but it won't take too long. Not sure if I can get that done before Christmas as my wife is keeping me hopping with all the holiday duties and the 'honey-do' list.

Also, your dad must be willing to put in a little effort as there is no 'silver bullet' in snooker and any changes or improvments take a little hard work and dedication, however I'm certain if he works at it a bit he should be able to get his game in a little better order.

By the way, Joe Swail still cues under his chin however he has his right elbow hanging in towards the middle of his back. His story is he learned this way as a young lad and he was too short to get his right arm into an ideal position and he just carried on with this style as it works for him. He may not be considered one of the top professionals but I'd still say he's able to pot a ball or two.

Remember, any method which gets a player to deliver the cue consistently straight, even if he stands on his head, is the right method for that player, especially if he feels this is the right way for him.

Thanks Terry, I like to give people a challenge

we'll have a look through the videos. I've PM'd you my email address if you wouldnt mind sending me that document.

Well we had a game today before I'd seen your message and I insisted he cued from under his chin which naturally brought the cue in closer to the body. We used a training cue ball and I could see that he was putting much less side on but as I was concerned about he is really struggling to sight the ball now. I suspect the reason all those years ago he cued off the side of his face was due to sighting the object ball.

If its not one thing its another! Well, we'll work on it and hopefully will see some improvement soon.

Outside of doing a 'copy - paste' I don't know how to attach a Word document here.

If you or anyone wants the document please PM me your email address and I will gladly forward the document.

anyone who wants the document will have to PM me with their email address and I will gladly forward it.

My own problem, I don't know or haven't figured out how to attach documents here plus I don't suppose the admin would appreciate large attached documents as part of the Forum

is it possible that you have a slight problem with your sightline and/or your dominant eye?

if your right eye is 100% dominant but you do not perfectly align it with your cue, right hand side could easily occur because you only think you're hitting the cueball dead center.
A friend suffered the same problem, and yes, it was an eyesight issue.
