How to chalk a cue correctly?

I don't mean to sound like I haven't a clue about the game but is there a "certain way" so to speak that you chalk your cue properly?

How often should you chalk it?

Every shot?

Every few shots?

Thank you - this is just puzzling me because I only chalk my cue every 4-5 shots, will this affect my potting hugely or not?

i pretty much chalk after every shot but notice that when the frame is over i'll sometimes go without chalking at all for the remaining balls. i guess this is more of an unconscious thing.

i can't see any obvious problems to chalking too much (your tip can only take so much) but it's the excess dust that is the nuisance.

in terms of physically chalking, i chalk with single strokes as opposed rubbing the cube on the tip as i see others doing. i try to keep my chalk wear fairly even also to get the most out of each cube.

Chalk stops you mis-cueing, if your not mis-cuing, your doing it right!

Single strokes, look at the tip to make sure it's all covered and do this after every shot.

heres a bit of an advice, dont know if anyone ever told you that. you do not chalk your cue, you chalk the tip.

I would advise a single, light wipe across the tip before every shot.

you rub your block of chalk up and down the shaft.....

but for the OP.....

chalk down the tip not up it as this can cause damage to the tip and build ups of chalk when you dont want them leaving chunks of it on the table...

i prefer to chalk little but often, just the tiniest covering on the tip, and use the break in between shots chalking it to focus again on the next shot in hand...

its all personal preference and a lot of it is phsycological in how you chalk it and how much....

For me, chalking before each shot is an important part of a consistent pre-shot routine, with no downside. Prevents you from going too quickly into the next shot. Also ensures the tip is chalked for every shot. My playing partner leaves his cube on the rail and chalks up whenever. He has a miscue "out of the blue" probably once every 10 frames.

not sure if someone has already said this but, chalking your cue should be something that you do almost as natural as it helps you get into a routine with your shots.

aaw dont mind me, im just mean, no wonder people dont vote for me in the member of the year poll.

but tbh, it seems to me that cue chalking techniques is not the most important thing to concentrate on when your in the middle of a frame.

watch the masters and count how many times the players chalk their cues.

i think its something statman has never done before
