  • Who was the amateur who nearly got 147 in the Crucible?

I remember watching it on the telly but I can't remember his name and google hasn't helped. His career earnings were something like £20k in 5 years, and he was a pink and black away from 147 (=£147k), but he missed the pink. I never heard of him since.

Can anyone remember who it was? And a link to the video would be even better!

Thanks for the answer, but that's not what I was looking for. This guy was seriously a guy who wasn't earning his living from snooker, or if he was, it must have been very meagre indeed.

Come to think of it, I'm not 100% sure if it was at the Crucible, but it was a big event anyway with the £147k on offer.

£ 147,000 is only on offer at the Crucible.

I can't recall anyone at the WC who fits your bill ...

Ok, maybe it was Stuart Bingham and my memory (and possibly the comments at the time) made it just seem more romantic, and I didn't make the connection afterwards.

          Thanks for the answers!

Brian Morgan made a break of 134 in 1994 aginst James Wattana in the last 16 I think this was the 1st Year the 147 thousand pounds for the maxium came in, but i am not sure if he was on a 147 at the time

Just a question...how could an amateur make it to the televised stages of any event in Britain? I know they use local ex-pros and some amateurs in the regional tournaments (Malta Open had Alex Borg) and I know there's a first round in the World Championships for WPBSA coaches and ex-pros (Tony Knowles competed last year I believe).

Sorry, I can't help with the main question though

I Know Gary wilkinson missed the yellow of it's spot while he was on a 147 at sheffield in 1991 just hit it to hard but 147 thousand pounds was not on ofer that year it was in the 1st rd against Doug Mountjoy.

                    near 147 crucible

just a pure guess but was it a player called Patrick Wallace who played at the crucible in 2001 just checking through some records not sure about missing the pink on 134? But he did compile a 135 in a First Round match against Alan McManus during a 10-2 victory hope this helps

                          hmm

It wasnt Morgan or Wallace, although 20 odd years ago Morgan missed the black on 140 in a pro-am.
