  • Sanding down a cheap cue??

Well ive got a cheap rileys cue to put me on whilst my new cue is in stock what i want. Thing is, it is a little sticky so can i sand down the whole cue to try and make it a little smoother(take off the sticky laquer coating)?

sand it down with very fine sandpaper then add raw linseed oil to the cue, polish and shine......

    should be fine then

well if its only a cheap cue - then go for it - but i would use wire wool rather than sandpaper, and obviously try to keep it even, i think you will be amazed at the difference it makes, good luck

afraid i aint got any wire wool. I aint got anything to re-coat it with anyway, so would it be ok to just sand paper it down evenly?

I went down my hardware store got some 0000 wire wool for 3 quid. Bottle of linseed oil another 3 quid.
My old cheap cue I took the varnish off using wire wool, just took a little while as I sat watching TV. Sandpaper unless you have very fine stuff I would rather use wire wool.

so im going for a few frames in a while with my dad. Could i sandpaper off the laquer for tonight, then purchase some linseed oil tomorrow to treat it with? Thre stickiness is doing my head in and my new cue is going to be 4 weeks

yeah sand it down it will be ok, but make sure you wipe any chalk residue off te shaft asap otherwise it will get into the grain and you will never get it out.....

and actually sanding down and re-finishing a bog standard cheap cue can make it feel a hell of a lot better than it was in the first place.....

I've refinished a few cues lately, I'd suggest sandpaper on a hard block. Wire wool may look like it's doing a gentle job, but it tends to only sand away the soft parts of the grain and leave the harder bits in tact, making the finish lousy. If you pin sandpaper to a block and rotate the cue, the sanding is always nice and even and your cue stays round without the peaks and troughs effect you can get with wire wool.

I'll try that next time. i just thought having a flat surface on a block might lead to getting square edges on the shaft (maybe this is how the tri-cue was invented ?)

If you're using grade 80 paper maybe! If you're using maybe 320 as a start then as long as you sand, turn, sand turn, then its fine. Particularly with ash.. aggressive wire wool work will definitely wear the softer bits more.
