I went down my hardware store got some 0000 wire wool for 3 quid. Bottle of linseed oil another 3 quid.
My old cheap cue I took the varnish off using wire wool, just took a little while as I sat watching TV. Sandpaper unless you have very fine stuff I would rather use wire wool.sigpic A Truly Beakerific Long Pot Sir!

yeah sand it down it will be ok, but make sure you wipe any chalk residue off te shaft asap otherwise it will get into the grain and you will never get it out.....
and actually sanding down and re-finishing a bog standard cheap cue can make it feel a hell of a lot better than it was in the first place.....

If you're using grade 80 paper maybe! If you're using maybe 320 as a start then as long as you sand, turn, sand turn, then its fine. Particularly with ash.. aggressive wire wool work will definitely wear the softer bits more.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
