  • Toughest Sport To Play?

I was with a friend of mine and a discussion started as to what the toughest sport to play is. I remember being down at the club once and one of the older players was saying that the two toughest sports in regards to spin is golf and snooker. As we were driving, I said to my friend, that from all the sports that I have played - cricket, hockey, tennis, league, union etc etc that I found snooker the toughest to play. My reasoning was that there is always so many things to take into consideration and that the lack of instincts required adds to the complications in my head - taking into consideration the pot, position, speed, side etc.

We did come to a consensus in saying that golf would rank rather high on a list of tough sports too.

    Any further thoughts?

Also, I think the main theme we were discussing was in regards to mastering the activity.

in Golf you always has a chance you take shots in turn however in snooker you could miss a pot on a break of 50 and 1-0 up and by the time you get the next chance your 4-1 down under pressure.

yes but in snooker the conditions are always the same or supposed to be except for the balls in different places. in golf every shots different every time the surface can always change, wind, rain, rough grass trees. i know you have your own ball in golf and its up to you what you do with it. where in snooker your both on the same table and you have to take your chances better as you can sit out most the game but in golf there's just so many variables. i play both i would consider myself a good snooker player regular 50s/80s break player and in golf i play off a 13 handicapp and i do go round in 84/87 regular but some days when the conditions are against you i can easly go round in 95/98 for me golf is the hardest game out the two.

its the same for everyone Rain doesn't come and go depending on who's playing and you always got another shot each hole in snooker its not that simple and just like in Golf every table does not play the same and for me personally i get miffed with snooker players that complain about the conditions just get on with it.

            Hardest sport?

Consider this! Snooker as far as i'm aware, is the only game which has been tampered with (pockets made wider) to please/assist people and their constant complaints due to a lack of desire to improve. This may well be the reason that Snooker lacks the respect it once had as a very difficult game in its entire degree. This was what made good players great, and the rest left in envy. I may have used this example before, but Dart boards have never undergone any adjustments to please the punters, and is flourishing as a result. People including myself have tried to play darts at some point, and instantly realised its enormous difficulty and accepted it!
So unfortunately our sport at grass roots level has inherited this lazy mindset that big pockets are acceptable! This i feel is something that needs to be addressed before we can go forward imo.

i disagree Golf is easier in comparison when you learn the basics ive played golf but ive played more snooker and i picked up Golf much faster to a adequate level that i can look good playing it.

ive not played much golf compared to snooker but id go as far as to say im a better golfer.

at pro level as i say you know the basics in each sport but each hole you play you play it in turns meaning you always got a chance and each shot is played separately where as snooker theres more things that can go wrong. yes weather conditions come in to it but thats luck of the draw in a medal comp when you play it doesn't make the shot harder but it makes where it finishes off harder to predict with wind etc snooker once you in your seat nothing you can do to stop your opponent clearing up.

                    Squash.

I never get that knackered walking round the table.

I found golf to be easier than snooker, but did not have time for it. Several of my old snooker mates got down to 3 and four Handicap golf players and they were quite good snooker players too. Two of them very good. All of us were also good at table tennis.
                        I was useless at football.

I would place snooker ahead of golf because I always found golf having a greater margin of error. We have all been impeded and disappointed on the snooker table where a few centimetres can (pardon the cliche) make or break the game.

i can understand what your saying about big pockets on a snooker table, although whenever i take one of my friends to play snooker for the first time (usually they can play pool to a deacent standard already) i always make sure we play on the table with the biggest pockets and even then most of them will get pretty frustrated at how hard it is to pot balls, the fact is snooker requires an increadible amount of patience and dedication to get to even an average level and ive found most people find that when a game is this hard it takes away the fun and keeps people from wanting to play.

I personally found snooker alot harder to get good at than most of the other sports ive played but thats probably the reason i like it so much.
