This may well be the reason that Snooker lacks the respect it once had as a very difficult game in its entire degree. This was what made good players great, and the rest left in envy. I may have used this example before, but Dart boards have never undergone any adjustments to please the punters, and is flourishing as a result. People including myself have tried to play darts at some point, and instantly realised its enormous difficulty and accepted it!
So unfortunately our sport at grass roots level has inherited this lazy mindset that big pockets are acceptable! This i feel is something that needs to be addressed before we can go forward imo.
Every sport and game has been tampered with to some degree by the advancement of technology with the equipment used. The only one I can think of that has stayed the same for the past fifty years is cricket, as far as equipment is concerned. But even with cricket the pitches are now covered where they once were not, so it isn't exactly the same.
Times change and things move on. I played darts when I was young, before the advent of tungsten alloys, mine were brass 32 grammes and were really thick barrelled, as a result of this I only ever had one 180 as two darts in the treble left practically no space for a third. With modern tungsten alloy darts you could fit six or more darts in the treble, so todays players have an advantage, darts is therefore easier than it used to be.
Snooker is not as difficult as it was, but it is still bloody hard to master as the margins of error are still pretty narrow. It is though still only a game, so is golf and darts and any other game where if something goes wrong all you do is lose. There are sports where if something goes wrong you can actually lose your life like skydiving, motorsport and boxing, so if you want it tough, then take up something like that.
Try hurtling into a corner at 150 mph on a motorbike alongside five others and braking later than them if you want to win rather than flicking a cue ball down to baulk for a safety 'cos you haven't got the balls to go for it.

          On ya Scotsman

Read through all this thread & finally someone mentioned Billiards

The variation of shots in Billiards is far greater than Snooker.

          No comment about Golf

I DID used to play quite a lot of billiards. Could make quite a lot of centuries, but never mastered top of the table play. Found it too difficult to keep the balls going round the black spot, so must would consist of in-offs, a few canons and a bit of potting. Half ball in offs in the middle pockets, til out of position, then in end pockets or a canon, and so on.
