  • A Trivial Question

You're on a break of 43. There's only the black left, and you're 7 points behind. You pot the black, the break goes to 50, and a respot is declared.

You win the toss and decide to play first. You shoot from the 'D' and pot the black.

Would that make the break 57?

    Just wondering...

I would say no - because the white has been moved to the D its not a continuous break

This must then be the only instance in which a break can end without a pot being missed, a foul played, or the frame ending?

      Good one for quiz nights.

        ........or the frame ending?
The frame HAS ended with the pot on the final black, albeit a respotted black.

Common sense would say No. After all the balls are potted it would be deemed 'visit over' (break concluded at 50) and a toin is tossed to decide on who has the 'next visit', or first shot at the re-spot black. Without looking at the rules, that would be my logical way of thinking anyway.

I would agree with the guys unless, Alan Chamberlain was ref then he would take the black out the pocket, declare it a miss an ask you to play from there

The break does end with the potting of the black to level the scores. Points from potting the respotted black are not counted as part of the break.

What if you pot the black to level the score and the white ends up in the D and you play the re-spot from where it lies ?
Would this be any different to potting the yellow off the last red and then potting the yellow again ?

It's no different. After potting the pink the break will end with the next shot, regardless of what the scores are. If the scores happen to be level then the fact that there's a re-spot does NOT mean that the break is continuing.

Think what the referee will call. Let's say you've just potted the six colours, so after the black he'll call 'Joe Bloggs 27', and put them on the scoreboard. After potting the re-spotted black, he'll call '7 and frame, Joe Bloggs'.

A similar instance... you're on a break of 73, but you miss your 10th successive black. A foul and a miss is called. The other player decides to put you back in from the original position, so you're still on a colour. You nominate black again, and this time you pot it. The referee will call '7' and so you carry on, and pot the other 5 reds and colours to make a break of 74. That is *NOT* a break of 147.

This is an example of potting a colour and then legitimately potting a red. This came up at a trainee Examiner seminar last year.
