  • 3 Miss Rule

    Hey Guys,

I'm sure you get this asked all the time but I used to search function to no avail.

I was watching snooker match a while ago and there was this who har about this 3 miss situation. When do you forfeit the match for missing and does it apply to when your snookered? It looked like he was snookered but the commentators said he could see 1/4 ball or something so the rule comes into place.

Can anyone clear this up for me please?

If the player is either snookered or else he cannot hit an object ball 'full-ball' in a direct line then the 3 misses and you lose the frame rule is not in play. However the 'MISS RULE' is still in effect and the player can lose points until the snooker required stage.

It's not quite the same as a free ball interpretation where you have to be able to 'see' a full ballwidth on either side of the object ball.

In this case he must be able to 'see' just full-ball only. This is why the referees on TV are always interfering with the players as they are checking if he can see a full ball or not.

And you only lose the frame, not the match. Steve Davis has lost a frame this way, but not sure of any other professioanls

Thank you Terry, very well explained.

I wasn't sure whether it had to be Full ball or just any part of it visable.

Yes, it's the central ball hit which is required by the rule for this case. And this is not quite correct IMHO, see this post.

you would have to play in the direction of the yellow with enough strength in the shot to reach the yellow. This would satisfy the ref that even tho you know you will foul, you are doing your best to hit it.
