  • Adjusting to lighting variations

I play in quite a lot of different clubs and they all have tables of varying quality in terms of cloth, cushions, balls, pockets etc.
I find the biggest variation to come to terms with is the differing lighting situations.
In my home club, I find the lighting perfect. The only lights on in the room are above the table and there is even illumination. I can sight and negotiate potting angles with relative ease.

I seem to really struggle adjusting to any lighting situation other than this. For example, if there are other lights on in the room that are a distraction, or if the lighting is so unevenly spread across the table, then I really struggle to pot balls with confidence.

Does anyone else experience this problem?

What is the ideal lighting situation for snooker?

We've recently had state of the art strip lights installed on both tables at my club and while it definitely looks better a cant say there is a whole lot of difference to my game but that could just be me!

On a similar note, I do struggle during the day if someone has left the curtains open and the table is mainly lit by the sun so light must have some effect!

Unless the lighting is so poor that the table is very dark I can't see why this should affect you. There are most probably other factors involved; if you are getting distracted by things off the table I would say it more of a concentration problem. Try and put these things out of your mind and play the balls.

my cluyb i play in is an open area bar, and there are lights all over the place, the lighting htey use for the table is pretty poor, and the windows are probably the main source of light, i dont really have much problem and can make a 40 break in the dark even with the tight pockets..

HOWEVER, having said that, i played on my mates table who has made his lights himself and i dont know what it is but they seem to be this awkward lux/brightness that i just cant seem to see any angle on any ball, its the only table i struggle with but luckily thats not where they host the big matches...

so i can sort of see your point..
what a frustrating, yet addictive game this is....

Well there was one place I played at where the lighting was so poor - just 3 bulbs across the centre of the table - that half the balls were in a dark shadow and the pockets were very dark. I find such uneven lighting a real difficulty.

I think good lighting is really important to help your eyes stick to the aiming point on the object ball. If the aiming point is in shadow, it seems to be harder to focus on this point.

Yes - concentration does also come into it. If curtains/blinds are open or there is a light on the wall, I'll have to fix it before I get down and play. It's not as easy as just putting them out of my mind.

Ok - I can still make the 40 breaks but it is so much harder and potting seems to be so much more complicated with poor lighting.
