When Alex Higgins won the world championship in 1972 it is apparent in a television interview(which appears on many snooker videos,ie 'Story of Snooker) and a still photo alongside his final opponent John Spencer prior to the final that the trophy they played for is not the one which is used now. Does anyone know why the better known trophy was not used and of the whereabouts of the trophy in question now?

I observed this a while ago.
The current trophy, held at the moment by Graeme Dott, is inscribed correctly from Joe Davis in 1927 up to 1952, and from 1963 onwards, including Alex Higgins, so I think it is likely that, although Alex was talking about his World win in that interview, perhaps the interview was conducted at some other event.
Does seem odd, though, since Alex only turned professional in 1971.

(Although to be fair, he was just leaving the commentary box and I was just leaving the bar, at about midnight halfway up Norfolk Street after the 2003 final.)

Or they didn't want to put his name onYou play a long slow deadweight red to a corner pocket. As it approaches the pocket, a kamikaze woodlouse crawls out from under the cushion and makes its way across the table, conflicting with the path of the red precisely at the point the red gets there. The red, needless to say, veers off course, and the future of the woodlouse is uncertain. - The Statman
