  • World Championship Trophy

When Alex Higgins won the world championship in 1972 it is apparent in a television interview(which appears on many snooker videos,ie 'Story of Snooker) and a still photo alongside his final opponent John Spencer prior to the final that the trophy they played for is not the one which is used now. Does anyone know why the better known trophy was not used and of the whereabouts of the trophy in question now?

I observed this a while ago.

The current trophy, held at the moment by Graeme Dott, is inscribed correctly from Joe Davis in 1927 up to 1952, and from 1963 onwards, including Alex Higgins, so I think it is likely that, although Alex was talking about his World win in that interview, perhaps the interview was conducted at some other event.

Does seem odd, though, since Alex only turned professional in 1971.

There's definately a still photo kicking about somewhere with Higgins,Spencer and the trophy. Can't remember where I saw it, it's probably in an old magazine somewhere.

Was anyone at this match? I'm thinking maybe Mr Everton, and of course Mr Higgins.

I asked Clive face to face outside the Crucible and he didn't know off hand.

(Although to be fair, he was just leaving the commentary box and I was just leaving the bar, at about midnight halfway up Norfolk Street after the 2003 final.)

Statman, the second post would imply that Graeme Dott is the world champ, did that really happen or did we both dream it

Another oddity about the trophy. Look closely at the picture in Snooker Scene (June) of Dott holding the trophy, and you can clearly see that Shaun Murphy's name had not at that time been engraved.

I gather they simply 'forgot' and that it has since been rectified.

Or they didn't want to put his name on
You play a long slow deadweight red to a corner pocket. As it approaches the pocket, a kamikaze woodlouse crawls out from under the cushion and makes its way across the table, conflicting with the path of the red precisely at the point the red gets there. The red, needless to say, veers off course, and the future of the woodlouse is uncertain. - The Statman

Does the world champion keep the world trophy for the year or are they provided with a replica? For instance when Doherty won I'm sure he said it spent the year sat on his mums telly.

Yes, it's theirs for the year, although it is not compulsory to keep it on the television!

I seem to remember that Mark Williams accidentally left it on his front doorstep and it went walkabout for a while!
