some questions about the rest

Just curious...what do early rests look like? Do they always looking the same, i.e. like a cross?
Was there a different name before, or has it always been called the rest?

I believe an early term for the rest was 'jigger' and I think there were various rest designs. 100uper could tell you more I'm sure.
