Help needed with this refereeing question

I was in an away match last night with a home team player refereeing.
I potted the pink and wanted to leave the cue ball on the pink spot which I got close to doing.
The ref started to re-spot the pink on its own spot and I pointed out that it almost certainly doesn't spot; he then proceeds to try and re-spot the pink and in doing so moves the cue ball (I guess by mistake) about 2cm.
We now don't know whether the ball would have spotted or not.

My question is has this happened to anyone before and what should the ref have done?

Well i dont know the official answer but he should give you the benefit of the doubt seeing as he messed up, what did he end up doing ???
If you ended up losing out i hope you gave him a suitable glare

Ideally, he should have used a ball marker to check that the pink spot wasn't occupied (a ball does not have to be on a spot for that spot to be occupied). But as he was a 'home player' and not a 'referee', doubt he had one.
This would, I guess, come under 'ball moved other than by striker'. The 'referee' would have to replace the cue-ball to where he thought it was before he moved it. He would then try and re-spot the pink (hopefully without hitting the cue-ball again).
It would be interesting, as jrc750 said, to know what he [the referee] done?

He should have replaced the cue-ball first and THEN the pink.

I agree with DawRef: ideally he should have used a ball marker to check if the pink spotted, but if he didn't have one he should have tried to spot the pionk very carefully. A good referee, though, will be aware of how a ball sits on a spot (ie which way it's likely to roll, if it doesn't sit perfectly on it).

Given that he moved the cue ball, then , as DawRef said, he should have first replaced the cue ball to where he thought it was and then tried to spot the pink again.

If a ball won't sit on its spot without rolling off and onto a nearby ball, then the spot is assumed to be occupied, and the pink should be spotted in accordance with the normal rules.
