Absolutely. The difficulty in applying the Miss rule at lower levels is as much to do with the lesser standard of the person refereeing as it is the lesser standard of the players. Add into that the obvious possibility of conflict of interest when the referee is often going to be a player from one team.

As you say, there is little wrong with the rule in principle and my suggestions (and others') for possible alternatives were a result of the way the thread was going without commenting on whether it was actually necessary!

The problem, as ever, is with the subjectivity of the call outside of cases such as underhitting or taking other than the simplest route available.

As long as there is a subjective nature to the call, there will always be scope for controversies.

To that end, I think it is probably worth looking to see if there is a workable alternative that removes subjectivity - perhaps making the penalties less severe so that there could be a blanket call of Miss whenever the ball on is missed.

However, finding it may be a bit more difficult.

Perhaps something like, if the player misses an object ball, the oncoming player can choose to have a free ball but is only allowed to take red+colour off it and then make a non-scoring shot. (Of course, he could play from where the balls come to rest and continue normally, or also have a proper free ball if applicable anyway.)
