Your 'right' cue is the one that you love to play with. Period. But you have to pay more to get a beautiful, good crafting quality, or we say 'a piece of art'. It has nothing to do with the games. Just purely emotional. You can take any girl out on a camping night, but sometimes (or all the times) you want to go with a beautiful one. This is how I feel towards cues.
(Ash lines/arrows will help absorb shock from the tip. Similar to shotgun's walnut wood stock with straight line front towards back is costly and more sought after by pro shooters).
(BTW, I used to play with a simple black butt machine spliced cue in my early days)

A cue really is a personal choice thing. However, you shouldn't pick a cheap and chearful one if you are aiming to progress with your ability. The only thing that you need to remember when picking a cue is it has to 'feel' right for you. If you have confidence in your cue you will have confidence in your game!

I have a cue that is about 70 years old (no badge on it and not even sure who made it). I only paid £20 for it but I did spend about £100 getting it thinned, ferruled, repaired (a dog thought it was a bone!) and extentions made! I have century breaks with it and it suits me....

I hope you find your perfect cue for the perfect price
      Highest Break
      Practice: 136 (2005)
      Match: 134 (2006)
      In 2011: 94
      Centuries made: 50+

hi james, glad to see that you have decided to invest in a decent quality cue...

there's a wealth of information on this forum regarding cues... try to test hit the cues wherever possible and go with the one that you feel most comfortable with... i'm sure it'll be a good investment as you will be bringing in more consistency to your game and not to mention a good quality cue would last you a long, long time if properly cared for...

but be careful not to fall into the trap of searching for the "self potter", there is no holy grail of cue...

        good luck!!

For my part, I've recently upgraded from a bamboo stick to a decent cue. The difference is remarkable and yet it hasn't made me pot many more balls. People talk about 'feel' and I honestly can't explain it but I've started positioning the cue ball better (as aposed to not at all) with the new cue. When I strike the cue ball I feel like I know what it's going to do. Which I didn't with the old stick. Is it worth the money? Hell yes.

hi bomvu, glad to know you are enjoying your new cue... what an interesting avatar you've got, the balls look like little cannon balls with the number 62 on them... just curious, what does it stand for?

Thanks damienlch. They could be cannon balls, but they could be christmas decorations too. Think I'll keep mysterious on this one.
