First Aussie Ranker?

THe BBC says that if Robertson wins today he will be the first Aussie to win a ranking event.

This made me think, What about Eddie Charlton?

Was he just a Mcmanus style competitor as in also was there or thereabout but won nothing.

Or is it just that there were no ranking events to win so his tournament victories were no Rankers?

Did Eddie win anything which today would have been classed a ranking event.

THere's also the good old Horace Lindrum world final I could bring up here as well I suppose.

Steady Eddie didnt win any ranking tournaments as such by the time the circuit expanded in the early 80s Eddie was past his best and started to slip out down the rankings and finally lost his place in the top 16 at the end of the 85-6 season when he dropped from 12 to 25, After losing a second round world championship match against Kirk Stevens when we was 12-10 up & lost 13-12 !!. that match also proved to be the last time Stevens won a match in the world championships proper in sheffield !!!!!

Most notable Australian players would be:
Horace Lindrum - finalist in 1936, 37, 46 World Championship. Won the official championships in 1952 but all the other leading had boycotted the event. First player to make 1,000 snooker century breaks in public.

Warren Simpson - finalist in the 1971 (played Nov '70) World Championships.

Eddie Charlton - Runner-up in World Championship 1968, 73, 75. Semi-finalist 1971, 72, 76, 78, 79, 82. World Match-Play Champion 1976. Pot Black Champion 1972, 73, 80. Ranked number 3 from 1976 to 1980. Qualified for the Crucible in 1992 aged 62. Ranked in top 16 aged 57, top 32 aged 64. First man to compile a century at The Crucible.

John Campbell - beat Ray Reardon at the Crucible in 1987. Reached one ranking quarter-final, 1983 Professional Players tournament. Best ranking 18.

Warren King - finalist in 1990 Mercantile Credit Classic (lost to Steve James 10-6). Also Mercantile quarter-finalist in '85. Best ranking of 35, in 1985/86. Good friend on the circuit of Alex Higgins.

Quinten Hann - Reached nine ranking quarter-finals, one semi. Ranked 14 for two seasons.
