  • What Title did my dad win?

    Hi,

This may seem like a strange question for a son to ask but i was hoping someone could tell me exactly which title my dad won in 1958 when he was 17.

He never really spoke about it as it always seemed like he felt snooker had screwed him over in some way and he fell out of love with some aspects of the game so it would be nice to know exactly what event it was if anyone knows,

    thankyou,

      Sorry, that may have helped.

It was Wally West, so when I try to research it all i will get is Snooker record sites and stuff about comic book characters.

Ah, I'm afriad all I can say is that the name rings a bell. I think Clive Everton & Dennis Taylor have mentioned him in commentary at some point.

The likes of Cyril and Statman will probably be your best bet for any more info.

Not the answer to your question, I know, but according to www.wikipedia.org:

'Wally West was reported to have made a 151 break in the final of a club competition in Hounslow in 1976. Jamie Cope was reported to have made a break of 155 in a practice frame during 2005.'

I've searched through the full archive of The Times from 1.1.57 to 31.12.59, using searchwords Snooker, West, W West (the full first name would not have been given in those days, it took years for them to differentiate between Alec and Albert Brown in the World Championship reports), and can find absolute diddly-squat.

The only edition I have from 1958 is December and I have been through cover to cover. No mention I'm afraid.

Walter West (Hounslow) won the B.A. & C.C. YOUTHS' (16-18) SNOOKER C'SHIP, by beating David Bond (Weston-super-Mare) by 4 frames to 2 in the Final at Burroughes Hall.
