The shaft had super straight grain but the grain seemed too soft because the chevrons were very broad with flat spots top and bottom at two places about 6 and 12 inches from the tip. That made the taper very poor and the cue arrived slightly bent at both of these points as well.

I think they're using better ash these days though and with the Ultimate you shouldn't have to worry.

Well, JP did get back to me at least. I managed to straighten it and a mate talked me into letting him buy it at a considerable loss. I was probably just unlucky.

well on his website it says that if you are not happy or dont get on with your cue within 2 weeks you can return the cue as long as its not a abnormal size cue you should have returned it i hope they stay true to making top quality cues

I knew all that, but was somewhat over the whole thing at the time. The cue shouldn't have left the workshop and once you've waited two months etc it's a real pain to pay more money to send it back, wait for replacement etc. Anyway, water under the bridge now.

Maybe they don't take the deposit until they start making your cue, then get the balance when it's finished? Someone else here would know. I think the wait is pretty long for ultimates, did they give you an estimate?
