In the UK and Australia 8.5 is popular but the guy at 8ballcoach.com doesn't recommend less than 9 and I agree. Loads of screw and side doesn't help if you can't stop the white where you want it and a stiff cue with tip that's not too fine lets you control stun and screw with your cueing.

So I think tip size doesn't have to be much different to snooker cues, but weight might be a bigger factor. I prefer a lighter cue for pool at around 17oz.

Well then you can definitely have a good cue to suit both games.

Yeah I would say if you're starting with just one make sure it's good for snooker, because a snooker cue has more work to do. The JP Ambassador is 18-19oz and 9mm tip so in theory should be good for you in both games if it has a solid shaft. But if you want to be sure that it's good for snooker 9.25+ is safest I think. Then you can see how you like it for pool and if it's no good, buy one of the cheap pool spec cues ADR still has in stock (apparently? lol)

I reckon using 9.5mm tip for both games will be okay.

If you wanted two cues, have you thought about getting 2 x cues from other makers which probably works out the same cost as JP or less depending on what model you get.

You could get two cues from dunns cues, matchplay cues, mastercraft, craftsman and more.

Cool, which one? I ordered one some years ago and it wasn't a happy ending on that occasion but I've seen plenty of good examples. Never seen a whippy JP and that's the main thing to recommend them IMO, as well as re-sale value.
