  • Higgins vs Taylor Irish Masters 1990

    Hi,

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this but I think it fits here better than anywhere else on the board if not please move or delete and I will put it in the proper place. I had a quick look through the rules and didn't see anything that prohibited asking about copies of matches so if that's not allowed I apologise for my poor eyesight and will remove the request.

Anyway I was hoping to track down a copy of the match, I've had a look in all the usual naughty places on the net for TV and found a couple of good Higgins matches (89 Irish Masters vs Hendry and 85 Masters vs Davis) but not the infamous grudge match.

I did watch it on telly when it was broadcast and remember it not being that great due to Alex trying to play trick shots all the time and pretty much throwing the game away but I would very much like to see it again in all it's glory if at all possible.

    Any help is much appreciated.

    thanks

    Alex

I remember watching that match live on tv, was a very tense atmosphere.

Yes the atmosphere was very tense but Higgins just kept going for silly shot after silly shot trying to intimidate Dennis IIRC

Considering it's one of the most famous grudge matches in snooker history I would of thought it would of turned up on the interwebs somewhere.

This could propably deserve its own thread (maybe there is one already) but what other famous or not that famous grudge matches there has been? Most recent must be between Bingham and Allen in Australia. Also 2002 WC semi between Hendry and O'Sullivan comes to my mind.

I remember ebdon beat davis in first round in sheffield years ago, it was a bit of a grudge match, cause i remember peter was bragging in the papers that he would beat davis.

Thanks jw147, didn't know about that one. When was this?

I guess there was a few between A. Higgins and Thorburn. I've understood that they didn't exactly love each other...

Was it Higgins v Thorburn in a final when there was some controversy over a foul and Thorburn refused to lend Alex his extension anymore?

Are televised snooker matches actually preserved anywhere other than the BBC? I know snooker may not be as popular other sports I won't care to mention but it seems strange that there isn't a record of these matches anywhere, I would of thought that great matches like the 85 Final would be available somewhere commercially.

By the late eighties VCR's were pretty common and someone must of videoed them.

The controversy being that Thorburn nominated the green for a shot where the colour being played wasn't obvious, hit it, and the ref (John Smyth) called a foul because he hadn't heard the nomination. Thorburn asked Higgins to back him up, and Higgins said he hadn't been listening.

Im not sure if it was this match, but i remember alex potted a ball that rattled and went up along the cushion into the pocket, or maybe it was thorburn who potted it.

Rex williams also had a few tense matches against higgins i think, not easy to remember

1972 World semi-final being the most famous. 30-30 frames all, with Williams leading 28-14 with five reds left misses a simple blue to the middle. Higgins steps in and makes a break of 32 and eventually takes the match..

I think it was Rex Williams and Alex Higgins game where Alex conceded on Rex's shot and Rex told him in no uncertain terms that he couldn't do that lol

Don't remember that. I do however recall that at the 1986 Hofmeister World Doubles against Rex Williams/Graham Miles while on a respotted black, with Higgins asking referee Len Ganley if he could pop to the toilet before continuing the match, with Williams saying "let's finish the game first". Anyway, Higgins was allowed to take a pee and when the match resumed after a few shots Miles potted the black.

Maybe this was the incident you were thinking of..
