  • Oot of line splices.

I've just bought a 3/4 cue and the splices on the butt are not in line with those on the shaft. It's only an 1/8 of a turn out and makes no difference but astheticly, astheticley, asfetically oh bugger it.. to the eye. Is there anything I can do to fix it myself?.

    edit...

Oops, just realised i've posted this in the wrong section, sorry. just one of them newbie things. If a mod would care to shift it perhaps?

      Hmmm
I think I know what you mean, I think you could get a cue doctor to fiddle with the joint!
      Where is the cue from?

I can send it back and have another of the same I suppose but i cant make up my mind if it's worth paying the postage for it really is such a minor detail.

If i told you where I had it from it'd spoil my next post... "guess the price i paid"

I would have thought slightly higher, maybe £200?

                    Okay here’s the story….

My son Alex is 21 in January and has no idea what he wants for a present. I thought of buying him a top flight cue one he could be proud of and keep forever. We discussed it and he said although he likes snooker and pool he's only interested in socially playing and reckoned such a cue would be wasted on him. Never the less he said a nice cue with extensions and an aluminium case would be a nice Xmas present so I started looking around.

The crap that's sold in the high street sores had my attention for all of 10 seconds and the local sports shop I bought our current cues from some 6 years ago has nowhere near the selection it had then. The club we played at every week till last year when our work patterns changed and we stopped going had a case full and you could try them out but I went there only to find it had closed down, so I turned to the net.

Boy have I done some reading. I must have visited 100's of sites this past month or so and scoured eBay’s pages like a shopaholic. I've bought one, then a case for it, then saw another package, Al wanted and I bought that, then went back there and bought one for myself, then as the price was right bought a third to resell. And then the one I really liked the look of which was out of my price range I got for a lot less than its site price or what it had been selling for on eBay. Chuffed with that I sold the first cue and case I’d bought breaking even and then while the final was on the other night with two mins to go the cue I’d last bought was being ignored so I threw in yet another bid. Didn’t' win it but got a second chance offer and just had to have it. Funny thing was I've got two of them now both for a fair bit less than my refused “make an offer" of a few weeks ago.

Anyways there are some knowledgeable guys on this site who know their cues just for the fun of it without looking at eBay or searching my name there have a guess what I paid for each cue and who made them (got them both for the same price) and which one do you reckon I should keep. (How they play I know is the most important but they both feel the same to me.)

Genuine Ebony... Jet black on the left one, slightly lighter on the right where you can just about see a bit of grain in the splices. Pretty sure they are ebony, though I suppose I could be misled.
4 splices of Thoya burr over 4 what I presume are stained sycamore splices. (Thoya burr was the decider for me I just love the look of the stuff.)
Handspliced, with all splices being level.
Ash shaft. Wouldn't say its exceptional grain but see for yourself.
3/4 airlock. Actually hear the "phutt" sound unlike the lesser quality of the airlock on Al's cue.
Semi quick fit short butt extension. Either stripy ebony or stained wood.
                    57" 18 ounces 8.5 mm tip
                    Balances at 16.5"
No Varnish, I could smell the beeswax when I opened them on delivery.
Plays well as far as I could tell but I’m just a nobody.
Splices don’t actually line up on the one on the left, about a 1/8 of a turn out.

Photo’s... links coming in a few mins I've got to hoover the carpet before i take some shots it's a bloody mess.

huh to 1/2 hoover the living rom take some pics and host them has took an hour! Although 1/2 of that was spent trying to take shots of the grain and they refused to come out with the flash. I need to do so in the daylight.

Anyways theres some good butt shots

I'm not saying yet, as it'll be easier to value were you to know the maker. I'm just trying to see what folks reckon base on the assumption that it plays as well as any, it's looks, and the details I've given.

Are we valuing each? Or together?

If it's each one, I'll keep my estimate of £200. Lovely cues by the way.

generous valuation!. it would be possible to move the joints and line up the splices but i suspect that the joints are copies of mike wooldridges airlock joint that are not screwed in place so if there are secure i would leave them.
