New Cue

Hi All

I am looking to buy my first expensive (to me) snooker cue,
I wanted a hard case mini butt and extending extention about £150.00
I have looked at maple shaft and ash shafts and still mifted in to which is better.
I have been playing with a friends cue and its is ash 9.5mm tip and he has sanded all the varnish off and its smooth and never sticks mid way into the game.

The site i saw a nice cue was Dunns and it was on the cue specials and was the maple shart looks great but then realised that it was dispatched from HK,

Hi Reynolds Welcome to the TSF Forum.

I would Highly Recommend a Master Cue for your Budget Ring Stu Green up at Greenbaize and tell him Gareth told you to call him for a Master Cue or Dave/Simon Brown at Craftsman Cues I dont think you will get a Brand New Master and Extensions and Case for £150 but will get a cracking Cue heres there Telephone Numbers Below.....

don't know about dunns cues , they look nice but never played with . just be carrefull as you are used to play with a ash shaft , maple could not suit as it is a complete different feeling

thank you for the above i have sent Stu and email as i cannot make heads or tails of it,
Craftmans on the other hand is simpler and the master cues look good,
i could buy the machine spliced (http://www.craftsmancues.com/acatalo...ed_series.html) which is £89.00
then theres the hand spliced (http://www.craftsmancues.com/acatalo...ic_series.html) £129.00
the only difference i can see is the grain on the hand made are better,
but if i go for this i wont be able to afford the extras at this time. (due to the misses budget cuts )

the cue look great but when i noticed the HK it was a real downer.
the reason for wanting maple was because i thought it would be alot smoother and lest stick when playing.

well maple is smoother for sure as there's no noticeable grain but if you got your ash shaft cleaned often it's not that important . if you got like me sweating hands when hot wheather maple shaft sticks more ( well i play a lot of pool too and it's really terrible during summer ). but the main difference is the wood consistency and elasticity that are completletly different from ash to maple and the most noticeable changes are amount of spin and deflection

It maybe worth visiting craftsman or greenbaize if ur in the uk.

U can then get the cue which feels right in your hand.

I do like the Craftmans Master cues.
maybe just becasue of the cost the machine spliced is the way forward???

Reynolds keep a eye on ebay as now and then they come up quite cheap! theres a Master Cue with Extensions & Case £82 at the moment look at link below!

right ! there's new cues that play terribly , poorly balanced ... maybe you can't guarantee the state of an old cue but you can't not guarantee to feel confortable with a new one .....

I have an awesome Omin custom made climax with 4 evenly spaced arrows shaft and tight straight grains,57.25in,18oz,9.6mm tip,
very responsive and well balanced.
reason for selling-its a bit short for me,getting a 59in cue made.

If you go for maple, don't get a one piece. They warp like there's no tomorrow.

Mine has warped about half an inch in 10 years (and I take VERY good care of it).

I would recommend ash - with as straight a grain as possible. A straight grain helps keep the cue fro warping.
