  • Your league

How does your league work? What other competitions outside of the league itself are run?

    My league includes the following:

3/4 divisions; each team plays each other twice, once home and once away. Three players required for each fixture, each playing 2 frames against the same opponent. 1 point per frame won. (we had 5 divisions in 1979-80, 1980-81 and 1985-86).

Our snooker league was first played in the season 1927-28 while the billiards league started in 1907-08 and fizzled out in 1969-70 save a brief revival in the mid-80s.

    We also hold:
    Snooker Individual and Billiards Individual knockouts, best-of-3 with best -of-7 final, which were first played in the season 1934-35;
Team Knockout, with automatic entry, handicapped, six frames as per usual league match but aggregate scores decide, first played in 1965-66.
Junior Individual (under 21), started in 1971-72. (entries go into the main Individual if insufficient entries)
Pairs Knockout, first played in 1973-74
A one-evening one-frame knockout for players in division 2 teams and below, in memory of a longstanding lower league player. First played in 1982-83.
Similar for the top division (also open to lower) since 1990-91.
Veterans' (over 40) first played in 1993-94.

Plate comp open to losers of their first match in all these events since 2000-01.

    I play in two leagues:

In the Leeds League, there are about 12 divisions of about 12 teams, each team playing the others twice, 4 players per team, each player playing two frames agains the same person. A point is given for each frame won.

There are also Scratch and handicap Singles and Pairs tournaments, a small individual Billiards league with about 16 players, and a CIU cup which is only open to CIU affiliated clubs, whether they are in the League or not.

Matches played on a Wednesday night

In the Castleford League (My main League) there are 4 divisions of about 16 teams, 4 players playing one frame pot-black style shoot-outs (No re-spots), with a 2 points for the winner of each frame plus an extra bonus of 2 points for the team who scores the most points throughout the match.

As above, there are Singles and pairs KO's at both Scratch and handicaps, but no Billiards.

Matches are played on Thursday nights

Not sure when they started, but I know they were both around in the late 70's

Would be nice if you could put a link of your clubs website (if available). Then we can have a look. I dont play in a league so i cannot add anything else, i'm afraid. As you are playing in different leagues, is there something like a premier league (not the pros) where the best teams play. For instance, we got over here a first and second division.

Neither of my clubs have websites, and the league websites are rudimentary at best!

It would seem that the Secretaries are slow to keep up with technology!

I play in the Bristol & District League.

We have 4 or 5 divisions of 12 teams, consisting of 4 or more per people team but only 4 can play in one night.

We play each other twice in a season.

2 players stay Home and 2 player go away from each club, they play a match on the best of 3 basis.

You get 1 point per match won and 1 point for the team that has the most frames.

eg, 3 of your players win 2-1 and 1 loses 2-0 you would win 4-1

2 of your players win 2-0, 1 loses 2-0 and 1 loses 2-1 you would win 3-2 because your team has got 1 more frame than the other team

2 of your players win 2-0 and 2 lose 2-0 then it would be a draw 2.5 each.

            Hope that made sense.

My team are currently joint to of the Premier League and im in the last 16 of the Bristol Open Comp.

i play in the absolute snooker swansea league - we have 3 leagues made up of 12 teams, every team plays every other team in their league twice, home and away, in the match we have 9 players, 3 play 1 frame of singles, the other 6 play 3 games of doubles, 1 frame, it is a point for every frame won, a maximum of 6 points.

We also have singles tournaments, doubles tournaments, handicapped singles and doubles tournaments, a veterans tournament for over 65's, we also have other tournaments. We have some very good players in our league, one player turned professional these season, jamie jones? We also have the youngest ever winner of the world ameatur play in swansea, but not in the league ... to young lol, even though he would probably beat all of us.

I don't play in a Snooker league (I play too much pool) but things seem a little different near me. In Wigan and I think Preston too there are lots of seperate leagues rather than one big league with lots of divisions. I can think of 4 different snooker leagues running in Wigan now off the top of my head!

Well our league is one of at least three in Bournemouth, and it's only open to those with a BH postcode, which does not extend more than about 10 miles from the centre of Bournemouth.
