  • Rules question

What is the rule if you foul on the final black when you are 7 points up?

    Respot or loss of game?

I think that it is a re-spot (as scores tied), but a few at the club tonight argued that you lose because of the foul on the final black.

    Which rule applies?

    Thanks!
My favourite players: Walter Lindrum (AUS), Neil Robertson (AUS), Eddie Charlton (AUS), Robby Foldvari (AUS), Vinnie Calabrese (AUS), Jimmy White, Stephen Hendry, Alex Higgins, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Dominic Dale and Barry Hawkins.
    I dream of a 147 (but would be happy with a 100)

Normally potting the black, or the first foul on the black ends the frame... UNLESS that means the scores then become level, in which case the black is respotted. And to clarify a popular misconception, the cue ball is played from in hand. A coin is tossed and whoever wins the toss has the choice of whether to play or put his oppoent in for the first stroke on the respotted black.

As I said above, if the potting of the black, or the foul make the scores level, then the black is respotted:

        4. End of Frame, Game or Match
        (a) When Black is the only object ball remaining on the table, the first score or foul ends the frame excepting only if the following conditions both apply:
        (i) the scores are then equal; and
(ii) aggregate scores are not relevant.
        (b) When both conditions in (a) above apply:
        (i) the Black is spotted;
        (ii) the players draw lots for choice of playing next;
(iii) the next player plays from in-hand; and
(iv) the next score or foul ends the frame.
        (c) When aggregate scores determine the winner of a game or match, and the aggregate scores are equal at the end of the last frame, the players in that frame shall follow the procedure for a re-spotted Black set out in (b) above.

Another one .......all spots taken . Had to re-spot the Yellow. Does it go nearer to the blue or the opposite side of it's own spot . I.e nearer the Baulk cushion.

Can't remember for the life of me
Still trying to pot as many balls as i can !

If you can spot a ball on its own spot, then it will go on the highest spot which is available, but, as in your case, if ALL spots are unavailable then a ball will always go as near as possible to its own spot on a straight line to the nearest part of the TOP (ie black) cushion. (The only exceptions are the pink and black, which COULd go below their own spots IF there is no space between their own spots and the top cushion).

If you have more than one ball to spot, the order in which they shoudl be done is this:

All balls which can go on their own spots will go on their own spots

              THEN

The highest value ball to be spotted will go on the highest value spot available

              THEN

Any that are left will go as near as possible to their own spot on a straight line to the nearest part of the top cushion.

Imagine you have yellow brown and black to spot! Only brown and blue spots are available. Brown would go on its own spot, black would go on blue spot, and yellow would go as near as possible to its own spot.

Thanks very much for the info !!

I will put up your answer on the club noticeboard - that should stop the arguing . . .

                  Rules question

Also I'd like to know if I'm in the middle of my break and my girlfriend wants sex on the table there and then if she or I moved any of the balls would my break be over or can I just replace after?

sounds like my kind of gal Chris ... don't suppose she has a sister? here's hoping ...

it'll be interesting to see what the refs say about this ... I'm not sure but I think it comes over the section "balls moved by other than the stroker" ...

ah, now we know why you spent all that money on the house extension and a snooker table!

Now would the referee try to replace the balls during the action or just stand back and observe, and wait for all balls to stop moving?
                      Up the TSF! :snooker:

Well, if it is only your girlfriend who has disturbed the (snooker) balls, then that comes under Ball Moved By Other Than Striker - in which case they can be replaced and the striker may continue his turn from where he left off. (UNLESS she is your playing partner in a doubles match, in which case she is considered to be an extension of the striker and as such the following paragraph applies.)

If you as well (or rather than) your girlfriend also disturbed any (snooker) balls, that would be a foul and the appropriate penalty would be awarded (minimum 4, higher if blue, pink or black was touched or pocketed). As with all fouls, this would immediately end your turn and, therefore, your break.

In this scenario, any balls moved would remain where they come to rest and not be replaced in their original position. (Any colours pocketed or forced off the table would be spotted.)

It is also highly likely that you would be warned for ungentlemanly conduct, whether consenting or not, so I wouldn't recommend that you carry out this course of action if on your final warning or if the result of the match is more important than the longevity of your relationship.

Removal of clothing may of course also become a breach of the dress code for the tournament, if any exists.

Remember finally that snooker etiquette requires you to withdraw from the table promptly at the end of your turn and not impede the progress of the oncoming player. This is also now reinforced within the written Rules of the game.
